A quick inner-circle man — he carries news, escorts important people and takes on errands. In a hard moment he is the first to catch his lord: in ch 41, when the news from Sedekamp staggers Lorist, it is El who steadies him.
Part of Lorist's inner circle since the Morant days. In time he rises to command a guard battalion of House Norton.
In the night fight at the Mantou Hills (ch 157) he falls off the hill and is long counted missing — Lorist, himself spent after the battle, worries over him in particular; before long El is found alive.
By ch 195 he commands his own guard battalion: with it added in, Lorist's column of over six thousand men marches in parade through the Northern Lands; El scouts along the road and reports the couriers he meets to his lord.
