In ch 86 he shows Lorist the storehouses in the valley — rows of crude wooden buildings behind a stockade, packed with supplies. In ch 123, together with Old Balek, he receives the new arrivals and reports that they are raising wooden shelters for the people.

In ch 169 Lorist puts him in charge of the whole business of developing the seven wasteland districts: organising construction, allocating supplies, breaking the fields. At the family's great councils (ch 140) he sits on a par with the stewards.

He runs Rockcastle's general affairs and land development: storehouses, supply, shelters and housing, the settling of the seven wasteland districts — construction, ploughland and the allocation of supplies.
