Pax Shirone

Pax is the seventh prince of the Kingdom of Shirone and the younger brother of the third prince, Zanoba. The court mage Roxy once fled Shirone, unable to endure his harassment (he stole her underwear and spied on her while she bathed). Later Pax imprisoned Rudeus, who had come for Lilia and Aisha, in a dungeon, hoping to lure Roxy back.

For his constant troublemaking, Pax was sent as a hostage to the Kingdom of the Dragon King (Wang-Ryu).

At first Pax is a petty, vain, and lecherous junior prince of Shirone with a swollen ego. He blossoms only when in a position of power: he revels in others' confusion, sets humiliating «tests», and, having savored their misery, brushes it off with a line like «it was a joke». His tastes are repulsive: to lure back the fled Roxy he imprisoned Rudeus in a dungeon as bait.

Held hostage in the Dragon King Country and mocked as a «failure», he nonetheless changed: he became ascetic and diligent, genuinely fell in love with the eighteenth princess Benedikt, and gained a measure of resolve. Yet at his core remained a craving for recognition and a need to constantly prove his usefulness.

In the Dragon King Kingdom, the king, enraged by Shirone's refusal to take Pax back, staged a coup: the “Death God” Randolph almost single-handedly slaughtered the entire royal family of Shirone, and the blood-soaked throne passed to Pax. Thus Pax became king.

When war loomed from the north, Pax summoned Zanoba to defend the fortress of Caron. Rudeus suspected that the Hitogami stood behind Pax; in truth, the evil god, through his apostles — King Leonard of the Dragon King Kingdom and General Jade — deliberately drove Pax into a hopeless position and pushed him to suicide: Pax threw himself down. Zanoba, too late to realize that Pax had asked him for help for the first time, failed to save him.

Pax's death had far-reaching consequences: he was meant to found the Siluon Republic, in which Bolt Macedonios would rise, from whose descendants Laplace would be born. Without this, Laplace's birth at the necessary point fell through — and Orsted deemed the cycle a failure. Grief over Pax pushed Zanoba to join the struggle against the Hitogami.
