Description

Shiro (シロ) is a striking beauty whose every feature—hair, eyes, skin, lips, hat, cape and dress—is pure white, so much so that her all-white tea-table and teacup make onlookers' eyes swim. Her full self-introduction is the absurdly long "Shiro = White = Weiss = Blanche = Album = Sefid," a string of the word 'white' in many languages, though she is happy to be called simply Shiro. She is a Rank 1 (first-class) explorer known throughout Hydrangea as the 'Undying White Rose Princess' and counts among the eight 'Impregnable' top female explorers who are said never to fall for a man. Cool and expressionless on the surface but secretly talkative and fond of romance novels, she has an icy body temperature, drinks milk and white liquor, sings a childhood song about the alchemist Haiyaan's three eggs, and stubbornly refuses to store her cherished white tea-set in a pouch, preferring to carry it on her back.

Publicly, Shiro is the guild's specialist in Death Dungeons and the bearer of official letters and communications. She first appears delivering the writ from Grand Guildmaster Alhazard Abramelin that grants Wof his explorer rank, and later accompanies and mentors Wof and the party Torquetum on a dungeon dive, teaching him battlefield caution. Her true nature is far grander: she is the Light Death King (光の死の王), one of the eight Kings of Death that serve the death-god Yomido, whose role among them is the sharing of information. Her counterpart is Ambrosius, the Dark Death King, an old acquaintance with whom she trades barbed pleasantries. Like the Witch, whom she treats as an equal and calls by a forbidden true name (Ra'ala), she is effectively ageless, appearing only a year or so older than Wof despite unknown age.

Over the course of the story Shiro grows deeply attached to Wof. She declares that she has 'decided on' him after he shares a warm meal of milk-cheese rice with her, holds his hand with fingers interlaced in public, and joins the rotating sleeping arrangement (won by rock-paper-scissors) alongside the Witch, Chaib and Munieka, sharing a bed with him. When Wof gives her a bespoke all-white bracelet—revealed to be a Legacy that compels the recipient to want to repay him—she thanks him with her first kiss, a strawberry-sweet, ice-cold one, before revealing she must travel far away to deliver something important. She frames this not as a farewell but a promise to return and continue 'the rest of this kiss.' Combat notes are sparse, but she wields cold and ice (the air chilling and ice mingling when she is displeased) and possesses an unbreakable death-related immortality befitting her title.

Because she is a Death King and may sometimes stand on the opposing side of Wof's dungeon-building efforts, Shiro occupies an ambiguous place—ally, mentor, love interest, and potential future adversary all at once—making her one of the more mysterious figures in Wof's expanding circle.
