Description

Carries the imperial letters into Lorist's study during the Second Prince crisis.

Appearance

At sixteen he is a true giant: tall, close to two metres, powerfully built — which is why Lorist nicknamed him "the big fellow".

Personality

For all his mighty frame he is unusually well-read and educated, with an elegant, refined hand (Lorist teases that his mother must write his letters for him). Diligent and reliable: he reads his lord's mood keenly and, seeing him out of sorts, turns visitors away himself.

Background

The eldest son of Sambavud — a former pirate who tried to rob Lorist at sea, was captured and went on to serve House Norton, rising to command the Sea Corps. Lorist once promised to take his son as an apprentice; at first Sambavud feared the boy was being taken as a hostage, then was desperate to hand the "big fellow" over to be taught.

In ch 395, at sixteen, Genolio enters Lorist's tutelage under the senior apprentices Redi and Schwarz, and at the same time becomes the lord's personal aide.

Story

From ch 395 he is never far from Lorist: carrying letters and orders, announcing reports, accompanying him on his travels. In ch 420 he delivers an order to the Fisablen Grand Duke; in ch 491 he rides with Lorist and Redi to the production bases.

On the day of the mass executions after Hansek's rebellion (ch 492), seeing his lord's black mood, Genolio turns away every petitioner and guards his solitude. He remains a trusted aide into the latest arcs (through ch 547 and beyond).

Trivia

In the Russian text of the novel his name is more often rendered "Dzhenorio"; the canonical spelling "Genolio" is kept here.
