Silent Casting

Silent casting is Rudeus's distinguishing talent, mastered from his earliest childhood, under Roxy. By the method he himself later teaches, new spells should be drilled until they can be cast silently before advancing to a higher rank. It is thanks to this technique that Rudeus was nicknamed 'Quagmire' and courted by the Magic University.

The family felt the power of silent casting early: as a girl, Sylphiette — taught by Rudeus — loosed a powerful attack spell without a single word to save him, startling even the seasoned Paul.

Silent casting is the working of spells without speaking the magic incantation aloud. An ordinary mage must recite a chant, and the higher the rank of magic, the longer the chant — which leaves him vulnerable in battle. One who has mastered silent casting looses spells instantly and without warning, with hands left free.

The technique's chief advantage is not only speed but freedom of form: only by casting silently can Rudeus reshape a projectile on the fly — give a stone bullet facets and grooves, set it spinning, and make it burst on impact. The technique is so rare that even the five-hundred-year-old Ruijerd sees it for the first time.
