Sylphiette

The only daughter of a poor hunter from the Asuran backwoods: her father half of the Long-Eared race, her mother with a drop of beast-race blood, a former slave. Because of her green hair — a color that in this world is linked to the Superd race and the Demon King Laplace — the other children cruelly bullied her. Rudeus alone stood up for her, cleaned her with warm water, began to protect her and to teach her magic, letters, and learning, and she fell in love with him.

When Paul sent Rudeus off to the Boreas nobles, Sylphiette's father urged her to become strong, not merely someone to be protected. She trained hard, became friends with Zenith and Lilia (who taught her the manners of a future wife), and carved Rudeus a wooden charm for his tenth birthday.

A slender girl, and later a young woman, with emerald-green curly hair and slightly pointed ears. As a child, because of the bullying, she wore her hair short and comfortable trousers; later, on Rudeus's hints, she grew it out. After one shock, her hair turned gray, as did Rudeus's. Even at thirty-four she looked about twenty, aging slowly because of her elven blood.

Kind, devoted, and diligent, with a quiet inner strength. As a little girl she idolized Rudeus as her savior and resolved to marry him; growing up, she learned not only to rely on him but to protect him herself. In the family she is a gentle pillar and in time increasingly takes on the role of a level-headed mother.

Her weak point is her green hair and the childhood wounds tied to it. When her son was born green-haired, old fears flared up again and she sank into depression, but she managed to accept the child and find peace on seeing Rudeus's resolve to protect him.

The Teleport Incident flung Sylphiette into the sky: as she fell, she softened the impact with magic, survived with broken legs, killed the monster that attacked her, and lost consciousness beside the second princess of Asura, Ariel Anemoi Asura. Thus she became a guard-mage for Ariel, concealing her face and identity under the name "Fitz."

At the Ranoa Magic University, Sylphiette, in the guise of Fitz, met Rudeus again, unrecognized by him. When the truth came out, their old love reunited them: at sixteen Rudeus married her, and she became his first wife, restoring his footing after a string of losses.

Sylphiette bore Rudeus a daughter, Lucy, and then a son, Sieghart. The birth of her green-haired son again awakened her fear that the child would be taken for Laplace; Orsted and Perugius assured her that this was not so, and, seeing Rudeus's readiness to protect his son at any cost, she calmed down. It is Sylphiette who, many years later, will announce his quiet death at the age of seventy-four.

A gifted all-around mage: while still a child she mastered silent casting under Rudeus's tutelage and is strong in healing magic — a skill that saved her life in her fall from a height. As Ariel's guard-mage "Fitz," she became famous for routing some two dozen attackers single-handedly. Thanks to her elven blood she is long-lived and ages slowly.

Canon fixes the name as "Sylphiette" (Sylphy); under the male pseudonym "Fitz" she long served as Ariel's bodyguard.

By legend, on first seeing Rudeus at the university she supposedly confessed: "a few seconds of looking at his face was enough, and my knees gave way."

The wooden charm that little Sylphiette carved for Rudeus's tenth birthday was later returned to him in person by Lilia; it became one of the relics dear to him.
