The story unfolds in the world of murim, a vast community of martial artists whose stage is the Central Plains. Everything here rests on sects, clans, and reputation, and as the hero himself observes, this world is "woven entirely of debts and grudges." Murim is split into two sides: the righteous faction, which includes the Nine Great Righteous Sects, and the unorthodox path of countless evil sects. The righteous are famed for discipline and chastity: the all-female Emei Sect, which the hero calls a "female Shaolin," the Shaolin Monastery, the Wudang Sect, and beside them the wealthy, fearsome Sichuan Tang Clan, dealers in hidden weapons and poisons.
A coming war looms over this world. In the future the Demonic Cult will raise its head and plunge the Central Plains into chaos, sweeping away minor figures "like fallen leaves." At its summit stand the Seven Heavens, seven absolute overlords whose descent the hero already knows from a novel he once read. Opposing the cult is the Murim Alliance, a coalition of righteous sects that gathers in council at the Shaolin Monastery under an Alliance Leader, along with elders such as the Sword Lord of the Wudang Sect and the Three Venerables. It is into this war, and into the ranks of the Seven Heavens, that the righteous maiden Cheongwol is one day fated to fall.
Power in murim rests not only on swords but on rumor. Two forces trade in information: the Beggars' Sect (Kaebang), which survives on intelligence alone and spreads comparatively reliable news, and the Hao Gate, which bets on sensation and "yellow press," for which few hold it in esteem. The younger generation of fighters convenes in the Hidden Dragon Society, a brotherhood of rising stars that gathers in taverns like the Pavilion of Drunken Clouds in Chengdu, the city ruled by the Tang Clan. A private danger stalks every master from within: the inner demon, a corruption of the mind that can devour a person and drive them to senseless slaughter.
Into this world falls a modern otaku, reborn in the body of a minor villain from that very novel. He himself is no masochist but a cold-blooded sadist and dominant; the masochists are the strongest women of murim, devoted to him. Knowing the plot in advance, he survives under the guise of a harmless shopkeeper, a former Kaebang beggar, and secretly steers events by working through powerful women warriors such as Cheongwol and Tang Soran. His aim is to keep his beloved ending from collapsing and to slip out of the Demonic Cult's grasp, and his tool is an absurd disguise: he passes off his own torture chamber as a place that "purges inner demons." The tone is dark, ironic, and unabashedly adult.
