Description

Shannon Circy is the younger sister of Miranda and a daughter of the Circy household, a family of the clerical/priestly class headed by their father Ralph. She has pale-lavender hair and striking yellow-gold eyes, and she is blind. To compensate for her lack of sight she manifested a Skill called the "Magic Eye," which lets her perceive the flows of magic energy that are invisible to ordinary sight; through it she can read a person's emotions from the fluctuations of their mana, sense hidden enemies, appraise the value of magical items, and scout terrain. Her eyes are the very same "demon eyes" once possessed by the Circy ancestor Mireia. She first appears in the science-city of Aramsas, where Lyle and his companions rent rooms in the Circy manor.

In her introduction Shannon is dangerous. She had been secretly playing the role of a fragile, helpless blind girl while in truth manipulating the household's magic energy to drive servants away one by one, and she had learned to touch and control the mana of those she suppressed. Attached to Miranda yet treating her almost like a toy, she harbored a twisted admiration for her late elder sister Mireia (whom she took as a model) and reacted with instant hostility to the Walt name. Lyle's ancestors of the Fifth and Sixth Generations, seeing Mireia's shadow in her, brand Shannon a "monster candidate" like Celes and press Lyle either to reform her or destroy her eyes. Lyle instead maneuvers to separate her from Miranda, drags her out of the manor, and works to turn her onto a better path — a process that finally breaks her act after a fright from Novem exposes that she can see.

Reformed, Shannon becomes the youngest and most useless member of the party: a bratty, lazy, cowardly glutton who dodges chores, sasses Lyle, throws tantrums, is terrified of insects, seasick, physically frail, and hopeless with money and (until late) with reading and writing. Miranda keeps her in line with fists to the head, Novem — whom Shannon fears above all — and Monica drill housework and letters into her, and she is regularly reduced to comic-relief crying. Yet her Magic Eyes make her genuinely valuable: she detects ambushes, spies on enemies through walls, guides Lyle in battle by pointing out where a foe is vulnerable, appraises rare stones, and can even sense the state of a person's heart through their mana.

Her arc centers on growth. Training under the ancestor Mireia inside the Blue Jewel — who treats her and Miranda as beloved descendants and urges Shannon to stop relying on mind-intervention and instead read the flow of mana to find where to strike — she slowly matures, builds stamina, learns to read and write, and even keeps an illustrated diary. Because of her Magic Eyes she is at one point floated as a candidate empress, with Miranda backing her. She briefly regains true sight after a kiss from Lyle, and she is counted among the women drawn into his growing circle.
