Description

Alette Baillet is a knight of the small kingdom of Rolfis, already earmarked as the order's next vice-commander. When Lyle first encounters her she is leading the largest party in the Baym labyrinth-city — roughly thirty combatants plus an equal number of support staff — not for treasure but on a kind of warrior's pilgrimage. Her true mission, a tradition of her homeland, is to season aristocratic recruits into elite knights by having them earn experience as adventurers, and to scout and bring talented people back to Rolfis. Because her aim is discipline rather than money and she prefers to take on labyrinth bosses herself while being generous about the spoils, she is widely regarded as an ideal commander and is genuinely popular among her subordinates.

In battle Alette is a pure combat specialist. She carries a top-class two-handed greatsword on her back and wields a wind skill that, when activated, spawns invisible blades of wind across the blade — devastating against tightly-packed groups of monsters. She once let a serpentine boss swallow her whole without a flicker of panic beneath her helmet before cutting her way free, and she routinely steps in personally when a boss proves more dangerous than expected. Off the battlefield, however, she is comically clumsy and prone to trouble: easily flustered, quick to blush, and often on the verge of tears, to the point that her own knights are embarrassed to be seen with her and once bound her up like a package and dumped her in a cell to keep up appearances.

Alette becomes one of Lyle's most reliable allies. After their meeting in Baym, she works alongside him and Miranda, exchanges information and rescue arrangements in the labyrinths, and later serves as Rolfis's envoy, guiding Lyle through the royal castle and even speaking up in his defense before Princess Anneline and the chancellor. During the war she commands a Rolfis detachment on the front lines beside Aria, marveling at Monica's and Aria's overwhelming power, and is entrusted by Lyle with leading assaults where she can 'let off steam.'

A running thread is her homeland's difficult position — Rolfis is a minor state bordering the religious nation of Zain, and Alette's discovery of a large cache of mithril in a deep labyrinth chamber becomes a diplomatic problem, since as a serving knight she cannot act against her country's will. Her personal arc culminates when Lyle arranges her marriage to Baldoa Landberg, a Walt-house retainer newly raised to knighthood; despite Ludmila's objections the match is formally approved, and Alette — now Baldoa's wife — continues to fight at his side and to visit Lyle's realm, radiating both joy and anxiety.
