Perugius Dola

Perugius is the “King of Armored Dragons,” a hero of the Laplace War that thundered four hundred years ago. Commanding twelve familiars, he revived an ancient flying fortress and, together with a host of comrades, fought against Laplace. In honor of his feat and the sealing of Laplace, the world's present reckoning of years — the “Armored Dragon Era” — came into universal use.

In that war the still-young Perugius clashed many times on the battlefield with the demon general Atofe and lost every time, saved now by the Dragon God Urpen, now by the North God Kalman. Before his death, Kalman forbade Perugius and Atofe to kill each other, and so the vengeance was left unfulfilled.

Perugius is a stately lord who carries himself with the dignity of an ancient hero. At audiences he is seated surrounded by his twelve familiar servants. The source gives no detailed portrait, but he unfailingly gives the impression of a man of high culture and power.

Perugius is a man of culture with deep learning and a sincere love of art; he values craftsmanship and promises to buy a figurine of Rudeus's making if it turns out well. Proud and long-memoried, he is capable of a feud spanning many years — for instance, toward the Immortal Demon King Atofe, on whom he takes revenge four centuries later.

For all his severity he is just and generous to those he has acknowledged: he bestows on Rudeus a means of communication, promises to teach him summoning magic, and gladly converses about art over the evening table.

Perugius neither reigns nor rules — he wanders the sky aboard the flying fortress “Chaos Breaker,” yet at the court of Asura he is still honored. Rudeus seeks an audience with him (through an acquaintance begun by Nanahoshi) and gradually wins his favor, astonishing him with his dolls and his tale of the clash with Atofe.

When, in battle, Zanoba holds Atofe back and Rudeus's lightning magic immobilizes him, Perugius at last gains the chance to settle scores with his old enemy with impunity (without, formally, breaking the ban on “killing each other”). In gratitude he gives Rudeus a whistle for summoning aid, promises to teach him summoning magic, and supports his cause.

Perugius becomes an important ally: he is received in Asura during Ariel's struggle for the throne, and his servants, who can be resurrected, along with his mastery, are invaluable. Together with Nanahoshi he spends years perfecting a Teleportation magic circle; when her return home falls through, he swears by the title of Dragon King to bring the circle to perfection.

Perugius is a mighty summoner who commands twelve familiars (among them Silvaril and Almanfi the Radiant); his servants he is able to resurrect. He is a master of summoning magic and teleportation magic, and he possesses the ancient flying fortress “Chaos Breaker,” which can be reached only by a special route.

His knowledge of magic and art is vast; he undertakes to teach Rudeus summoning and helps in the creation of the most intricate teleportation circles.
