Myne

Description

Myne (マイン) is the protagonist of Ascendance of a Bookworm. She is the reincarnation of Urano Motosu, a Japanese college student and avid reader who was crushed to death by her own book collection during an earthquake at the age of 22. Urano's soul awakens in the body of a frail, sickly five-year-old commoner girl named Myne, the second daughter of the soldier Gunther and the dye worker Effa in the lower city of Ehrenfest.

Myne has midnight-blue hair and golden eyes, and because of a magical illness called the Devouring her growth is stunted, so strangers mistake her for a child years younger than she really is. She is straightforward, resourceful, and relentlessly determined, pressing on with her schemes despite endless setbacks. Though she thinks of herself as selfish, she is fiercely protective of her family and friends and cannot bear the sight of blood or the suffering of others.

Horrified to find a world with almost no books, Myne declares that if there are none, she will simply make them herself. She teaches herself paper-making and printing with the help of her friend Lutz and the merchant Benno, earning a place in the merchant world and, later, in the temple as an apprentice blue shrine maiden. Her boundless mana and inventiveness gradually draw her from the poorest streets of the lower city into the affairs of nobles.

Her circumstances eventually force her to leave her commoner family behind: she is adopted into Ehrenfest's archducal family and takes the name Rozemyne, continuing her mission to spread books and printing across the land.
