The Sword Emperor (검제), whose true name is Bae Hu-ryeong, is a voluntarily incomplete Sword Constellation from the World of a Thousand Swords. A burly, tanned, gorilla-like man with red eyes and waist-length hair, in his own world he conquered the Tower swiftly but died before clearing the 100th floor.
When Kim Gong-ja is beheaded by the Sword Saint Marcus Calenbury, he copies the "Sword Emperor" skill, creating a second Bae Hu-ryeong bound to him. Fascinated by Gong-ja's utter indifference to death, this copy chooses to become his master. The two share an almost identical personality—stubborn, selfish, childish, and quick to provoke each other for fun—understanding one another like twins.
Where Gong-ja embraces death and willingly becomes a true Constellation, the Sword Emperor clings to life and mortality; through their bond each teaches the other about what he lacks. He is also the former master of Marcus Calenbury. It is ultimately revealed that his true body waits on the 99th floor, and that he and Gong-ja are each other's "keys" to reach the 100th.
