Shang Xin Ci, also known as Zhang Xin Ci, is a gentle and famously beautiful woman of the Southern Border, introduced during Fang Yuan's early travels. Kind to a fault, she gives food to starving servants and knowingly overpays the poor, a warmth that others often exploit.
She is the illegitimate daughter of the Shang Clan leader, born of an affair and raised under her mother's surname, Zhang, enduring bullying and hardship. After her mother's death her clansmen forced her to run a caravan, expecting her to die on the road.
On that journey she takes Fang Yuan and Bai Ning Bing into her caravan; they reveal their strength and protect her to her destination. Reunited with her father, Shang Yan Fei, and awakened as a Gu Master, she is acknowledged as a Shang, and with Fang Yuan's guidance she fights for her place and eventually becomes leader of the Shang Clan.
