The Holfart Kingdom is the central polity of the series. It sits on a collection of floating sky-continents, joined by air routes and patrolled by Armor-equipped fleets. Society is matriarchal by ancient design: noble women hold rank, magic, and the right to choose husbands; noble men are expected to compete for that selection.
Power is shared between the crown of House Holfort and the Four Great Houses, of which Redgrave is the leading military pillar. The court is opulent, the matriarchal customs are at their most absurd at the academy, and the kingdom's defence rests on its airships and Armors plus a thin, increasingly improbable handful of capable people — Leon Fou Bartfort emphatically included.
Most of the series' plot beats hinge on the kingdom's internal fragility: the academy scandal, the Fanoss invasion, the bureaucratic warfare around Leon's rising rank. The Holfart that begins the series as a textbook otome backdrop ends it as a real, badly governed country that Leon is trapped supporting.
