Mô tả
Dantalion is the protagonist and narrator of *Dungeon Defense*. In his old life he was a college dropout and shut-in who had beaten the brutally hard dungeon RPG «Dungeon Attack» on his seventeenth playthrough — the only place he was ever the strongest. He wakes inside that game's world not as the legendary adventurer Lolita Mundus he had played, but as the weakest entity available: Dantalion, the 71st-ranked Demon Lord, with a level-2 body, two points of raw strength, and a single goblin for an army.
**The man behind the screen (ch 1-10).** The prologue shows Lolita Mundus felling the great Demon Lord Bael at the head of a heroes' party — the in-game ending he ground out over seventeen runs. The reveal is that this triumph existed only on a monitor, and the player behind it is a self-loathing wreck living off his mother's credit card. Dropped into the dungeon as the pathetic Demon Lord Dantalion, he murders his first adventurers in a goblin ambush, vomits over the corpses, and learns that his only tutorial reward is the skill **Acting** — the perfect gift for a man whose one real talent is lying. From the first kill he settles on his rule: survive, and gather money.
**The schemer rises (ch 10-134).** Dantalion has no muscle, so he weaponizes knowledge from the game — the ranks of all 72 Demon Lords and the fates of the human heroines. He builds a state out of slaves and outcasts (Laura de Farnese, Lapis Lazuli, Daisy, Jeremy), turns a worthless weed into the only cure for the **Black Death** to corner kings, and reads minds through the **Status Window** and its **Affinity** gauge. By the autumn of ch 134 he is a power behind the Eighth Crescent Campaign, coaching the Demon Lord Sitri through the war's logistics while playing peasant farmer in Parsi's village.
**The Empire-killer (ch 134-300).** As the Crescent Alliance Army pours onto the human continent, Dantalion graduates from petty schemer to architect of total war. Paired with his iron chancellor Laura, he runs down Queen Henrietta of Bretagne and the exiled Demon Lord Agares in a month-long pursuit across Frankia, herding them to the sea at Le Havre with siege, famine, and public burnings rather than a single pitched battle. When the cornered enemy turns on Agares, he sends his adopted daughter Daisy — bearing the **Sword of Bael** — to take the Demon Lord's head.
**Operation Minerva and the cost (ch 300-507).** His true design is **Operation Minerva**: to bait every army, human and Demon Lord alike, into one great war that grinds them all to exhaustion. He inherits Paimon's secret Liberation Alliance, makes and breaks emperors through the corpse-puppet Rudolf, and rules the Habsburg Empire from the shadows as Court Count. But every victory is paid in souls — Jack Orland, Paimon, and the friends he sacrificed haunt him, and his rival Elisabeth grows into the heroine fated to end the Demon Lords.
**Acta est Fabula (finale, ch 507).** In the end Dantalion fakes his own death and retires to snowy Novgorod as the painter Giacomo Scruta, living seventeen quiet years with the Demon Lord Barbatos. The series closes with the two of them burning his hundreds of portraits — the screaming faces of everyone he used — then climbing a winter mountain to die together beneath a bare cherry tree, dreaming of one more spring's flower-viewing with all the people he had loved and lost.
Personality
Dantalion is a liar by vocation and an intriguer by temperament — he himself jokes that if lying were an Olympic sport he would have been exempted from military service. Beneath the wit lies a self-loathing nihilist who fled real life because it never rewarded effort the way a game did. In the demon world that emptiness hardens into ruthless instrumental reason: he treats people, cities, and even plagues as levers, and he can think two or three moves past any opponent. Yet he is not without conscience — his first kill makes him vomit, his victims return in nightmares, and the slaves and outcasts he gathers become the only thing he genuinely loves. The finale exposes the truth under the mask: a man who carried the guilt of everyone he sacrificed and chose, in the end, a quiet death beside the one woman he loved most.
Powers and methods
As the 71st Demon Lord, Dantalion is physically pathetic — a level-2 body with two points of strength and no aura, useless with a pickaxe let alone a sword. His real arsenal is information and the game-system overlay only he can see. The **Status Window** shows him a target's stats, level, current thoughts, and an **Affinity** gauge locked behind hidden «locks» he can pick through covert quests, while his tutorial skill **Acting** lowers a listener's suspicion of his words. Above all he carries metagame knowledge from «Dungeon Attack»: the ranks of all 72 Demon Lords and the destinies of the human heroines. From these he engineers wars rather than fighting them — manufacturing the Black Death cure, weaponizing scorched-earth logistics, faking evidence with Memoria, and orchestrating Operation Minerva to grind every army to dust.
Role in the story
Dantalion is both the narrator and the engine of *Dungeon Defense*: the entire plot is his ascent from the bottom rung of the demon world to the hidden master of a continent-spanning war. He inverts the «weakest reincarnator» premise — winning not through hidden strength but through politics, deceit, and a willingness to do monstrous things — and the novel uses his first-person voice to make the reader complicit in that calculus. His arc binds together every other major figure: he forges Laura, Lapis, Daisy, and Jeremy into a state; he duels Elisabeth, Henrietta, and Agares across nations; he kills Paimon and inherits her revolution. The series ends not in conquest but in withdrawal — his faked death and quiet final years with Barbatos turning a story of triumph into one of reckoning and grief.
