The Azure Dragon Ring — better known as the Coiling Dragon Ring, from which the series takes its name — is a soul-protecting Sovereign artifact and the treasured heirloom of the Baruch Clan. The one that passes to Linley is damaged, and can only be slowly healed through spiritual energy. When Linley receives it, it houses the soul of the grand magus Doehring Cowart, who becomes his first mentor.
The ring can draw in and refine unbound souls, sending their strength to reinforce the wearer's own soul. Linley's ring contains four droplets — one gold and three blue — later revealed to be a drop of the Sovereign Azure Dragon's distilled blood essence and three drops of Water-type Sovereign's Might. In truth the ring once belonged to the true Azure Dragon, Sovereign of the Redding Clan. Only after Linley becomes a four-way Soul Mutate is he finally able to fully repair it.
