Lutz

Lutz (ルッツ) is Myne's close childhood friend, the youngest of four sons in a very poor family in the south of Ehrenfest; his father Deid is a carpenter and his mother Karla a textile worker. He has short golden-blond hair and jade-green eyes and, having grown up in the lower city, at first wears heavily patched, secondhand clothes.

Calm, patient, and quietly stubborn, Lutz is one of the few people unfazed by Myne's outlandish ideas; instead of dismissing them, he looks for practical ways to make them real. He is deeply loyal, keeps a close eye on Myne's fragile health, and defies his own family's wishes to pursue his dream of becoming a merchant.

When her poor health keeps Myne from a merchant apprenticeship, Lutz becomes her hands in the outside world, learning to read, write, and calculate to catch up with children from merchant families. He apprentices at Benno's company and helps spread the paper-making and printing industries. In recognition, Rozemyne names him a Gutenberg — specifically the Gutenberg of selling books.
