Varis

Varis is the first prince of Alveria, son of King Ars and Queen Mina. In his past life he was Sakagami Ryusuke, a 35-year-old Japanese civil servant who spent ten years working in water supply and sewage administration. He fell asleep reading a web novel about a 'villainess' titled 'The Crown and the Chastity Cage' and was reborn as an infant prince, retaining all his memories. Outwardly he is a handsome youth with silver-ash hair and blue eyes.

In the original novel's plot his character is a 'pitiful pretty-boy' prince whom political enemies deceive into exile, while his 'villainess' fiancee grows disillusioned with him. Knowing this fate in advance, Varis deliberately forges a different path: with cheat knowledge from his past life (sanitation, infrastructure, epidemiology, education) he enacts reforms, wins the love of the 'villainess' destined for him, and gathers a harmonious harem while saving the kingdom.

By temperament Varis is a pragmatic reformer: cold and calculating in politics, but kind and shy in private. The presence of his second, otherworldly personality shielded his mind from the mind-control of the demon-god Morrigan in the finale. It was he who destroyed Morrigan with a spatiotemporal cage spell and rescued the possessed Reina.

In the end Varis succeeds his abdicating father to the throne and becomes 'the Wise King Varis.' His harem consists of three heroines: Reina (his queen-wife), Miria, and Feril.

Varis wields scriptural magic, a scholarly, reproducible system requiring no innate gift, whose power depends on what one has read. Key spells include (auto-reading), (the solitary chronicler), and combat spells such as (distortion field, which slows time), (a gravity leap), and (the spatiotemporal cage) with which he slew Morrigan. Initially weak in battle, he restored the lost 'warrior's magic' of the legendary hero Warlock, uniting sword and scriptural magic.
