Bang Biyeon is a middle-aged merchant of the Changhwa Merchant Group, shrewd yet good-natured. At a glance he reads from a man's face that he has been cheated more than once, and he lights up like a child at the sight of another's wares. Appraising Han Seojin's leather goods, he becomes his business partner and his guide into the merchant world of the murim.
Meeting the wary Han Seojin on the road, Bang Biyeon takes his suspicion without offence and wins him over with charm, rummaging through bundles of rope and leather. Later he travels with Han Seojin to Chengdu for Tang Soran's wedding, drawn both by a merchant's instinct and by curiosity about the young magnate Wi Cheonsang.
