Tao Yang met Yang Kai when he came to visit the evil cavern where they travelled together for a while. Yang Kai saved life of Tao Yang and his sect mates when Demon Qi fountain got released in the evil cavern. Tao Yang was one of Yang Kai allies who came along with his sect members, to help him during the Inheritance war.
