Natsuki Subaru is the protagonist of Re:Zero. A seventeen-year-old former shut-in from modern Japan, he is transported to the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica by unknown means during an ordinary errand. There he receives an Authority he names "Return by Death", which resets time to a fixed point whenever he dies, though he is unable to tell anyone about it.
Subaru stands around 172 cm with an athletic build, medium-length black hair, and distinctive sanpaku eyes that make him look sharper than he is. Loud, stubborn, and prone to overconfidence, he masks deep insecurity behind bravado. Yet he is fiercely selfless toward those he loves, willing to endure repeated death and despair to protect them, which drives both his growth and his breakdowns.
Arriving penniless and unable to read the local script, Subaru is saved by a silver-haired half-elf and resolves to repay her, eventually working as a butler at Roswaal's manor and then becoming Emilia's knight in the Royal Selection. Though he comes from another world, he proves strangely bound to its history, drawing the attention of the Witch of Envy and the other Witches of Sin.
