Zola Fou Bartfort is Baron Balcus's second wife, foisted on him in a typical Holfart matriarchal arrangement: a noblewoman of nominally higher status who treats her husband as livestock and her stepchildren as inconveniences. She is vain, status-obsessed, financially incontinent, and convinced that whatever the Bartforts have is rightfully hers to spend.
She is Leon's most reliable irritation through the early arcs. Her schemes to elevate her own daughter (Marie's biological sister, by an accident of geography) and to bleed the estate dry give Leon his first taste of just how badly the kingdom's customs work for the people stuck inside them.
Once Leon becomes politically untouchable, Zola's leverage collapses. The household quietly stops letting her sign for things, her grand parties evaporate, and she is left in a luxuriously gilded sulk.
