Nicks Fou Bartfort is the eldest son of Baron Balcus and the designated heir of House Bartfort. He inherited the family's modest looks and a working sense of duty: he can fight competently, manage a backwater estate, and — crucially — tolerate his younger brother Leon, which most people cannot.
Nicks treats Leon's increasingly improbable career with a kind of bewildered patience. When the third son starts coming home decorated, then titled, then in his own warship, Nicks simply asks what needs to be lifted next. He is one of the very few people who knew Leon before any of the otome-game plot existed.
He marries in time and becomes the working spine of the family while Leon is off being important. The Bartfort lands prosper under Nicks's plain management combined with Leon's connections.
