Tang Jeokcheon, who bears the fearsome title Poison King, is the patriarch of the Sichuan Tang Clan, one of the mightiest houses of the murim. Behind his dread reputation as a poison master hides a father worn down by worry: he will do anything to free his beloved daughter Tang Soran of the heart demon that torments her. It is he who sends envoys to Han Seojin bearing a priceless medicinal root and who travels to Mount Emei in person to beg the Emei Sect leader for help.
In public Tang Jeokcheon carries himself with the commanding grandeur befitting the head of a great clan, yet with old acquaintances such as the Emei Sect leader he speaks softly and confidingly. His whole being is bound up in love for his daughter: he admits he would beg anyone to save Tang Soran, and he sees with dread, in another's broken fate, a possible future for his own child.
Tang Jeokcheon brings the Tang Clan to Mount Emei, where his daughter challenges Cheongwol to a duel over the Phoenix title. Later, hearing of the gifted Yeongcheon's fall to the Blood Path, he draws a parallel with his own withering daughter and turns for help in desperation. Learning that a man exists who can soothe heart demons, he showers generous gifts on the humble shopkeeper Han Seojin.
