Gu Yeong is one of the three beggar 'uncles' of the Emei branch of the Beggars' Sect who watch over Han Seojin. Sharp-tongued and observant, he is the first to recognise an Emei battle robe and never misses a chance to needle Han Seojin, teasing that he has secretly fallen for its owner. With Gwak Du and Ma Childeuk he forms the hero's loyal beggar entourage.
Gu Yeong keeps dropping in on Han Seojin for drink and dumplings and gladly takes to the road with him, even to Tang Soran's marriage viewing, rather than moulder alone on Mount Emei. His good-natured ribbing lightens the days, and his sharp eye more than once proves useful on their outings.
