The universe of A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality is ordered by the Heavenly Dao and divided into three great tiers, likened to a sky, a mountain, and a sea.
The Upper Realm is the “sky”: vast super-worlds and giant planes that make up the last roughly 5% of all worlds, including the Immortal Realm and the Vast Glacial Realm, where the ceiling of power is unknown. The Middle Realm is the “mountain”: large worlds and mini-worlds (about 10%) whose highest attainment is the Great Ascension stage, encompassing the Spirit Realm and the Elder Devil Realm.
The Lower Realm is the “sea”: all the small worlds, about 85% of the planes of existence, where the ceiling of cultivation is the Nascent Soul stage. It is from just such a Lower Realm small world that Han Li's journey begins, as he ascends from mortal life through the ranks of the cosmos.
