Theocracy of Zairant

Zairant is a theocracy, a religious state built around the cult of the creator-god Zai-Arios. Here sacred magic is revered as the 'word of god,' and power is held by the institutions of saints and popes.

The state is hostile to other races - elves and dwarves - and regards heretical magic as absolute evil, declaring a Holy War to fight it. It was in Zairant that Miria, heiress of House Elfein and a 'saint,' spent seven years: she was a candidate for pope, but renounced her ordination for love of Varis. In the finale her supreme rite summoning the creator-god deceives the deity and paralyses the theocracy's Holy War without a single sacrifice.
