Bertea

Bertea is a southern coastal kingdom, Alveria's neighbour, where the 'aristocratic' and 'populist' factions warred for centuries. Thirty years ago that struggle collapsed into civil war, famine and floods of refugees.

The populist faction earned its keep by exporting lime to Alveria; when Alveria set up its own production, Bertea lost the income and the strife flared anew. In desperation one faction used heretical magic and summoned the black demon-god Biblos, destroying its own capital. King Ars defeated Biblos, and Alveria conquered and rebuilt the country. In the finale Bertea becomes a free city, with a parliament of merchants and artisans and its own militia, realising Rhinas Volm's 'dream of democracy.'
