Holfart's nobility encodes its rank directly into its names. The middle particle every noble bears — 'Fou', 'Fia', 'Rafa', 'Rapha' — denotes their precise position in the court hierarchy and is impossible to fake without immediate detection.
'Fou' is the broad ordinary nobility, the rank of small landed houses like the Bartforts. 'Fia' marks ministerial and senior service families (Marmoria, Arclight). 'Rafa' belongs to the high crown circle (the king and queen, Holfort branch). 'Rapha' is the rank of the Great Houses and the Crown Prince — the apex (Redgrave, the Crown Prince's branch).
The system is one of the most concentrated expressions of the kingdom's matriarchal order. Marriages, careers, even seating arrangements are determined by it, and Leon's gradual climb up its rungs — from Fou backwater to titled marquess — is one of the running spine arcs of the series.
