Deskripsi

**Immortal Barbatos** (intro ch 141-142). To the demon world she is a legend: a Demon Lord who has lived over three thousand years yet looks like a small, white-haired girl whose hair holds a living lustre. As 8th-rank she leads the Plains Faction, the most warlike of the three factions, and she is the last true master of black magic, wielding the Death Scythe that corrupts the mana of anything it cuts and forces a fatal mana-reversal on swordsmen and mages alike. Famed for devoting herself to demonkind more than any other Demon Lord and for keeping her virginity for two thousand years, she is adored by fanatical followers; human households hang her portrait, and rumours that she is a lesbian only deepen her cult.

**Dantalion's patron (ch 141-160).** When the unknown 71st-rank Dantalion blackmails the Archduke of Cacola with a Memoria recording of their bedroom games, the demon world learns that Barbatos and Dantalion are far more than lord and subordinate. He becomes the secret brain of her Plains Faction; she becomes his sponsor, confidante and lover. In private their roles invert what the demon world assumes: she plays the submissive, he the master. The two treat each other as equals despite the gulf in rank, bound by a depth of trust she otherwise reserves only for her sworn brothers Beleth and Zepar.

**The Crescent campaign and the corpse-throne (ch 200-300).** In the Eighth Crescent Alliance war Barbatos commands a legion through the human continent, taking the fortress-city of Krems, then Brandenburg and Austerlitz. Wise enough not to rule conquered land openly, she binds the corpse of the dead crown prince Rudolf with black magic and pushes him forward as a puppet emperor, then formally declares herself regent of Brandenburg, of Austerlitz, and at last of the whole Habsburg Empire. With her elite Death Knights and Demon Lords like Beleth she breaks human armies; alongside Vassago she helps grind down the peerless warrior Agares and Bretagne's queen Henrietta.

**The longest hunt (ch 134-510, finale).** Barbatos is greedy in the most human way: more land, more wine, and above all five thousand more years of life, openly so she can spend them with Dantalion. When at the end he fakes his own death and vanishes, she abandons rank and empire to search for him alone, going from town to town under a thin cover story; sixty-four times she is fooled before she traces him to Novgorod, living as the painter Giacomo Scruta. They share seventeen quiet years there.

**Acta est Fabula (ch 507).** In the final chapter the two, now old, wake knowing this is the day they will die together. Barbatos, ever the cheerful arsonist, talks him into burning the hundreds of portraits crowding his studio; as the canvases scream in Laura's, Lapis's and Paimon's voices, she holds his wrist and lets him grieve at last, draining the soot from his heart. Then they climb a snowed-over mountain to a bare cherry tree, lean on each other, and pass away at dusk, promising to go flower-viewing again next spring with everyone they loved.

Personality

Barbatos is bright, teasing and almost childlike, forever cracking jokes and winking even on the day she dies. She is unabashedly greedy — for land, for fine wine, for thousands more years of life — yet what she wants the life for is simply to spend it with Dantalion. That sunny surface hides genuine monstrousness: she has burned more than a dozen human cities and floats arson as a fun way to solve any problem. To the demon world she is the proud, untouchable 'Immortal Barbatos' who kept her virginity for two thousand years; in private with Dantalion she is the willing submissive, a contrast only her deepest trust makes possible. Above all she is loyal, ready to throw away rank, empire and dignity for the one person she loves.

Powers

As the last great master of black magic, Barbatos can raise the dead and bind even a fallen prince's corpse to walk and rule as a puppet; from her shadow she calls Death Knights, undead horsemen with an ogre's strength who serve as the perfect strike force for night raids and lend twelve of their number to Dantalion. Her signature weapon is the Death Scythe, which does not merely cut: it corrupts the victim's mana and forces an artificial mana-reversal, destroying a swordsman's aura or a mage's circles — the same art that once crippled Paimon. Three thousand years of war have made her one of the strongest Demon Lords alive, and unlike many, she is as deadly on a battlefield as she is in court intrigue.

Role in the Story

Barbatos is the political and emotional anchor of Dantalion's rise: she is the high-ranking patron who shelters the despised 71st-rank, the faction whose banner he steers from the shadows, and the regent through whom the Demon Lords seize the Habsburg Empire. Where other allies are tools or rivals, she is the one bond he keeps to the very end. Her arc closes the entire work — the searching widow who refuses to let him vanish, and the partner who walks him through his grief and dies at his side beneath a cherry tree — turning a story of relentless scheming into one that, finally, is about being loved.
