Chapter 27: The Crux

January 17, 2020 · 6 min read · 1,124 words

"Lord Chegewen, the fight for that Red Crystal Diamond up ahead is really heating up. We should hurry over there." One of the two Seven-Star Devil clones behind Chegewen sent him an urgent telepathic message.

"Shut up," Chegewen replied.

Those two Seven-Star Devils were Chegewen's subordinates, but they hadn't participated in the last Plane War. Chegewen had never told them about Lin Lei either. The two of them didn't know who Lin Lei was.

"So Lin Lei came too," Chegewen thought, a knot of worry forming in his chest. "According to our intelligence, that Red Crystal Diamond is very likely a Supreme God's token. Even if it's not, it's at least a Sovereign-level artifact. If I obtain it and present it to the Sovereign… the Sovereign might find a way to acquire a third Sovereign artifact for me."

A Supreme God's token — within arm's reach! How could Chegewen possibly give up on that?

"So Mr. Lin Lei has come as well," Chegewen said with a faint smile. "I wonder what brings you to this place?"

"There's been a lot of talk lately about this Red Crystal Diamond treasure. I got curious," Lin Lei replied with a faint smile of his own, flying forward as he spoke. "Chegewen, let's head over together."

"It would be my pleasure." Surprisingly, Chegewen wasn't in any hurry. He matched pace alongside Lin Lei.

Chegewen had witnessed Lin Lei's strength before. He understood perfectly well that if they fought head-on for the diamond, Lin Lei could kill his subordinates with a mere flip of his hand. As for Chegewen himself… although he possessed both physical and soul-type Sovereign defensive artifacts, Lin Lei wouldn't find it easy to kill him. But casting him into the spatial turbulence wouldn't be difficult at all.

Chegewen didn't have divine clones elsewhere. If he fell into the spatial turbulence, even a Sovereign would struggle to find him. After all, the spatial turbulence was vast and boundless, its expanse nearly equal to the sum of all planes combined.

In such an enormous space, if a single person was cast in, how could a Sovereign possibly locate them? Unless they had a divine clone following the Sovereign to point the way.

"My Lord Chegewen, more and more experts are gathering over there. If you don't step in, Lya and I won't be able to hold them off!" The Seven-Star Devil urged him again.

"Don't rush," Chegewen replied. "Now that Lin Lei is here, it won't be so easy for anyone else to grab the Red Crystal Diamond."

"Lin Lei — who's that?" The Seven-Star Devil sent the message while glancing at Lin Lei. When Chegewen had returned, he'd never mentioned Lin Lei to them… after all, it was his own embarrassment — why would he tell his subordinates?

"A Perfected Highgod," Chegewen responded with just those few words.

The Seven-Star Devil nearly jumped out of his skin.

Meanwhile, Lin Lei was thinking: "Chegewen is the Light Sovereign's emissary. Could it be that the Sovereign sent him here to investigate the Supreme God's token?" What Lin Lei worried about most was a Sovereign taking notice of this matter. His gaze swept over Chegewen, who was now behaving with the utmost deference.

The two high-level gods behind Chegewen were unremarkable. Lin Lei had never heard of them and didn't give them a second thought.

In Lin Lei's eyes, ordinary Seven-Star Devils truly weren't worth much. Even Mansion Lords or Asura-class figures could only make him take slight notice. After all… he had already reached the absolute peak of divinity. Within the realm of gods, no one could defeat him!

"Chegewen, I'm going to speed up. Keep up." Lin Lei willed it, and earth divine power radiated outward, enveloping everyone around him.

Whoosh!

A streak of earthen-yellow light flashed across the sky and vanished, and the entire group had already arrived deep within the Neville Mountain Range.

Deep in the Neville Mountain Range, over a hundred figures darted about.

"Haha, I never expected that I, Brodi, would attract so many powerful figures!" A hearty laugh echoed from within the mountain forests. In the sky, numerous figures hovered and stood, and below among the trees, more figures were stationed. It was clear they had completely surrounded Brodi down below.

But no one dared to make the first move.

"So many people showed up, huh." A stocky, bearded man muttered, his green eyes scanning the crowd. "Just the ones I can recognize — there are at least fifty-six Seven-Star Devils. The rest are probably Six-Star Devils. And there might be one or two Asura-class experts mixed in among them."

Everyone understood. The Red Crystal Diamond was scorching hot.

If one person moved to grab it, they'd immediately be swarmed. Not a single person present was confident they could survive being besieged by such a massive group of Seven-Star Devils.

Just then…

A disheveled, long-haired man in a black robe drifted out from the mountain forest, a smile on his face. He glanced casually at the enormous crowd surrounding him. "Well, well… who would have thought? I, Brodi, in my entire life, would manage to attract so many powerful beings to hunt me down together. What an extraordinary honor! Even if I die now, it was worth it!"

This was none other than Brodi. Surrounded on all sides with nowhere left to run, he had stopped fleeing and instead shown himself.

Whoosh! While Brodi was speaking, a green figure suddenly shot toward him, clearly attempting to strike first.

"Hmph!" A cold snort rang out.

Whoooosh~! A fiery red blade-shadow surged skyward, instantly tearing through the air and slashing down at the green figure. The green figure's body suddenly blazed with a hazy, luminous glow, actually managing to withstand the terrifying strike — but the impact still sent him hurtling backward.

Immediately, those who had been itching to move restrained themselves, not daring to launch any sneak attacks.

At this moment…

The disheveled Brodi stood in the air above the mountain forest, surrounded by a massive number of supremely powerful beings — yet he showed not the slightest sense of being cornered. Instead, he smiled at the scene and declared loudly: "Gentlemen, tell me — with so many of you here, who should I give this diamond to?"

The numerous Seven-Star Devils and Six-Star Devils looked at one another. No one spoke.

"That's easy enough," a clear, crisp voice called from the distance. "Just hand it over to my boss."

A massive sphere of earthen-yellow light materialized in midair. As the light dissipated, seven figures appeared: Chegewen and his two subordinates, along with Lin Lei, Bei Bei, and two others from the Luote Tribe.

"What incredible speed!" Chegewen's two subordinates were both stunned.
