Chapter Thirty-Five: Amethyst Monsters
The brown-haired woman "Jialan" and the silver-haired man "Jiarod" sprinted side by side at full speed.
"That Dilia is truly an idiot," Jiarod cursed under his breath. "A highgod demon, no less, yet she stays with a bunch of midgods and refuses to leave. She's practically asking to die."
"Enough. If Dilia wants to throw her life away, what can we do about it?" Jialan shook her head. "Besides, whether we even survive this danger remains to be seen. Let's go — put as much distance between us and those monsters as possible."
Jiarod seemed to recall those monsters and couldn't help but shudder. "Right, let's go — fast!" The two of them accelerated again, streaking away.
Lin Lei's group, meanwhile, had fallen into chaos.
"Just now those two highgods said this Amethyst Mountain Range is very dangerous. Are we really going to keep pressing forward? I think we should stop running around blindly and stay put."
"Stay put, and that's safe? Didn't you see those two highgods running? If staying put were safe, why would they leave?"
Lin Lei furrowed his brow, gazing at the white mist that blanketed everything around them. "Amethyst monsters? Those two said 'beware of the amethyst monsters.' If even highgods flee in fear from them, then what about us…" He turned to look at Dilia, Bei Bei, and Olivia.
"We should split from this group," Olivia transmitted mentally. "Staying with them will only bring more trouble."
Lin Lei glanced back at the crowd.
"Mr. Lin Lei, you — you won't abandon us, will you?" someone immediately spoke up.
"Lady Dilia, we're following your orders — please, don't leave us behind!"
"Lady Dilia…"
The midgods and lowgods were most worried that Dilia would leave. If she did, who would protect them? Having a highgod demon with them was the only thing that gave them any sense of security.
"Shut up," Bei Bei barked. "Keep it down."
In the Infernal Realm, the crisis of death could descend at any moment. Who had the leisure to protect others?
"What are you yelling at us for? Just a midgod, and you think you can order us around!" Many of them already had it in for Bei Bei.
Bei Bei flared with rage.
"Silence!" A low voice rang out.
Everyone looked toward the source — it was Lin Lei. He was frowning, seemingly listening intently to something. The midgods and lowgods gradually began to hear it too — a strange, low-pitched roar, faint at first.
But moments later, the roaring grew louder. Something was closing in on them at tremendous speed!
"A beast's roar?" Many people began to exclaim in alarm.
Lin Lei immediately transmitted through divine sense: "Dilia, Bei Bei, Olivia — run, now!" He shot forward without hesitation, and the other three followed without a moment's delay, sprinting at top speed.
"After Lady Dilia!" someone shouted immediately, giving chase.
The hundred-plus people scrambled along behind them in a disorderly mob.
But the four of them were genuinely fast. Under the tremendous gravitational pull, Lin Lei and Bei Bei's powerful bodies were more than sufficient to resist the gravity, allowing them to sprint at full speed. Dilia, as a wind-type highgod, was even faster. And even Olivia, the slowest among them, was a midgod of the Light System — a system well-suited to speed.
The crowd of over a hundred was quickly left behind.
But then —
"ROAR~~" "ROAR~~"
The roaring echoed between heaven and earth, drawing closer at breathtaking speed. Their pace was far faster than Lin Lei's group.
"So fast," Lin Lei thought with a shock. The monsters were running so hard that the ground itself was shaking — the violent tremors sent chills through everyone's hearts. "ROAR~~" "ROAR~~" The beastly roars grew closer and closer, as if coming from right behind them.
"What — what is that thing?"
"Kill the monster! Kill it!"
"Hah, die!"
"AAAAH!"
"Lady Dilia, help! AHHH!"
Howls of fury and piercing screams of terror came from behind.
Lin Lei, Dilia, Bei Bei, and Olivia couldn't help but look back — and what they saw shocked them.
At first glance, the creature resembled a great lion. It stood four meters tall and was over ten meters long, and its entire body was composed of golden stone that radiated a purple glow. The divine artifacts wielded by the midgods slashed against its body and couldn't so much as scratch it!
The strangest thing was —
Three spikes protruded from its head in a triangular formation, and over a hundred more spikes bristled densely along its back, covering it entirely!
"A hundred and eight spikes!" Lin Lei judged instantly. "And its whole body emanates an amethyst aura — everything is suffused with purple light. The color, the aura, both resemble amethyst exactly. Could it be… that its entire body is made of amethyst?"
As he sprinted, Lin Lei's mind raced with speculation.
There were two of the amethyst monsters in pursuit. Both had their massive jaws gaping wide, and with a casual "crunch" each one could snap a divine-level powerhouse in half, then swallow the upper body whole.
"ROARRRR~~~" The amethyst monsters swept the area with their crimson eyes, their razor-sharp claws swiping casually.
CRACK! A divine artifact went flying, and a divine-level powerhouse's body was smashed to pieces. The victim's head tried to break free and fly away, but under the tremendous gravity, it was utterly impossible to take flight. The amethyst monster's cavernous mouth sucked inward, and the head was drawn straight into its belly.
In the blink of an eye, nearly twenty people had perished.
"RUN!"
"These monsters are immune to both soul attacks and physical attacks!"
The brief battle shattered whatever remaining courage the crowd of over a hundred had possessed. They had slashed with all their might against the amethyst monsters' bodies and failed to inflict the slightest wound. Soul attacks? The monsters didn't even flinch. And yet the amethyst monsters dispatched them with ease.
