Newnelly Castle is the ancestral seat of House Quordenze, standing at the very center of Newnelly's triple ring of walls. It is Wilk's home. Some two hundred meters are left between castle and walls, laid out as a garden with flowerbeds, ponds, and a tea pavilion; the gardener keeps the scenery in season, and the garden is one of Wilk's favorite places.
The castle is staffed by a large household; in the garden Wilk meets his sister Fanni, and she also comes to his chambers in the evenings. Because of strict rules, neither slave traders nor slaves are admitted into the castle, so Wilk makes his first purchases at the country mansion.
