Kim Yongjun was a D-rank Hunter active in Korea during the early days of the Gate crisis. Like many low-rank hunters, he risked his life in dungeons to earn a living, facing monsters far beyond the capabilities of ordinary humans.
He participated in a routine expedition to a D-rank Dungeon, joining a party that included other hunters of varying ranks. Among them was E-rank hunter Sung Jin-Woo, the weakest member of the group.
The raid took a tragic turn when the dungeon revealed a hidden, far more dangerous area—the grim temple of Cartenon. Kim Yongjun lost his life inside that dungeon, one of several casualties that day, as the party was decimated by the ancient statues' deadly trials.
His death, along with the others, became the catalyst for Sung Jin-Woo’s survival and transformation. Only Jin-Woo and a handful of hunters escaped, with Jin-Woo later chosen by the System to become the Shadow Monarch. Kim Yongjun’s sacrifice is a grim reminder of the brutal reality faced by weak hunters.
