Nightingale

Nightingale is the first witch of the wandering Witch Cooperation Association to make contact with Roland. Her real name is Veronica Gilen, which she rarely uses as a rejection of her past life: she was once an assassin. In time she becomes Roland's personal bodyguard and the head of Graycastle's Security Bureau.

Her power lets her slip into an invisible realm she calls 'the fog,' where she is untouchable and can carry others with her. Her branch ability, the Eye of Truth, lets her see the color and shape of others' magic and detect lies by watching a liar momentarily 'blacken.'

Sharp-tongued, fearless and guided by her own sense of right and wrong, she at first approaches Roland with suspicion while guarding the younger witches, but becomes one of his most devoted companions and his second love interest.
