Anna

Anna is a witch from Border Town and the first witch Roland meets, whom he rescues from execution — the act that begins his entire policy of freeing witches. Born to a poor miner's family, she awakened her power on the very day a fire killed her mother.

Her ability, 'Heart Fire,' produces a flame she can make hotter than a forge or as cool as room temperature; it later evolves into 'Blackfire,' letting her sense and shape molecules to cut, weld and forge metal with flawless precision. This makes her indispensable to Border Town's workshops and one of the sharpest minds in the realm, on a par with Roland and Tilly.

Reserved and quiet with strangers but lively and talkative with Roland — especially about science — Anna is a studious genius who always keeps a book at hand and loves to experiment. She becomes his most trusted partner and closest confidante.
