He released the old man's hand, tucked the blanket around him, and walked out of the ward.
Dr. Gao and Old Wei were both standing outside. When they saw
"Has the old man fallen asleep?"
"Mm." Chen Ge looked at the two of them, his gaze lingering on Dr. Gao a beat longer than necessary. "What are you two doing here?"
"It's about the amnesia business again." Old Wei sounded a little helpless. "Ever since we came back from the village, I've been following Dr. Gao through psychological therapy, trying to recall what happened back then."
"Dr. Gao is treating you?"
"He's the best psychiatrist in Jiujiang. He's also well-versed in criminal psychology and has worked with us on multiple occasions." Old Wei seemed to be on familiar terms with Dr. Gao. "It's just that before, I was always watching him treat other people. I never thought one day I'd be the patient."
Chen Ge's expression didn't change, but his mind was already on something else.
The night before last, when Li Zheng entered the monitoring room at Qixia Lake Community and saw Dr. Gao, he had also acted quite familiar with him.
Getting along so well with rank-and-file officers — beyond Dr. Gao's own personal charm, it probably had more to do with his history of assisting the police in solving cases.
"Old Wei's case is rather serious, so it needs to be supplemented with medication. I do have prescribing authority, but the drugs I normally keep on hand aren't very effective for Old Wei."
Dr. Gao said a few casual words, then led Old Wei away.
Chen Ge watched the two of them disappear down the corridor and sat alone in the hallway, staring at Dr. Gao's retreating figure with a complicated expression.
"Just now in the ward, after he said he loved his wife very much, he pushed open the 'door.' I hope I'm overthinking it."
He sat at the entrance for over ten minutes before a doctor and a nurse finally came by to check on the old man's condition.
His physical ailments hadn't improved, but his complexion looked much better, and he was sleeping peacefully.
Chen Ge picked up Little Little and stopped in front of the hospital bed.
"Mr. Chen, please try to visit the old man more often when you have time. His mental state is only stable when you come."
"No problem," Chen Ge agreed without hesitation.
"Thank you on the old man's behalf. To be honest, I've worked at this hospital for over a decade, and this is the first time I've seen someone who, after performing a heroic rescue, refuses an inheritance and insists on doing everything possible to save the patient." The doctor gave Chen Ge a smile. "People like you are rare."
Chen Ge and the doctor walked out of the ward. He suddenly remembered something. "Doctor, a few days ago, didn't New Century Paradise out in the western suburbs of Jiujiang send over some patients? I heard they fainted from fright in a haunted house?"
"That did happen. Why do you ask?" The doctor looked surprised.
"Which ward are they in? I'd like to go have a look."
"All right." The doctor hesitated briefly. "They're on the fourth floor. Our hospital's leadership is close with the directors of New Century Paradise, so they set aside a separate ward for the tourists who were frightened. They even put together an emergency response team to handle any incidents at that park."
The doctor led Chen Ge toward the fourth floor, still muttering under his breath: "I really don't understand those people. If they're that timid, why go looking for thrills in a haunted house? They don't know their own limits."
"What if it's not that they're timid, but that the haunted house really is that terrifying?" Chen Ge smiled and said nothing more.
Arriving on the fourth floor, Chen Ge glanced up at the surveillance camera. This particular camera covered the entire hallway.
