Chen Ge reached into the hidden compartment of his backpack and pulled out a sealed bag wrapped in oil paper.

"Good, no one's tampered with it." Inside the bag were the long nails the plush doll had used the night before, the tips still stained with blood.

After carefully putting the bag away, Chen Ge made a statement under Old Wei's supervision, then left.

Rushing back to New Century Paradise as fast as he could, Chen Ge got started on another day of work.

He opened the haunted house's barricade, applied makeup for Xu Wan and Xiao Gu, had Uncle Xu handle ticket sales at the entrance, and there were even staff members arranged by Director Luo to manage the queue outside. Chen Ge did a lap through the haunted house and suddenly realized there was hardly anything for him to do.

Xiao Gu was growing more skilled by the day. Xu Wan was already a veteran employee, and the twenty-four mannequins in the underground scenes had become seasoned workers under Chen Ge's instruction. They had memorized the haunted house's rules, and sometimes when they got a little too carried away and scared a visitor unconscious, they'd actually attempt CPR — afraid Chen Ge would be angry.

Sitting in the area where visitors signed their liability waivers, Chen Ge leaned against the wall and took out his black phone.

After Han Bao'er had lost consciousness, the black phone had vibrated once, as though it had received a new message.

Putting the black phone away, Chen Ge entered the prop room and found several yellowed patient records in a wooden crate.

What struck Chen Ge as odd was that only five of these records had black-and-white photographs attached. The records for Wang Shenglong, Men Nan's mother, Wu Fei, the Devil, and Xiong Qing did not have any photos.

"Is it possible that only confirmed dead individuals get a photograph attached?"

Wang Shenglong was still alive. Men Nan's mother was keeping watch over Men Nan's alternate personality. Wu Fei had been dragged away by the female ghost of the Living Coffin Village. The Devil had been turned into a puppet by Zhang Ya. Xiong Qing had been transformed into a Red Coat with the help of the Strange Tales Association.

Aside from these five, every other patient's record had a black-and-white photograph of its respective subject.

Chen Ge stared closely at the photographs. Trapped within those black-and-white images seemed to be one wretched soul after another — some weeping, some laughing, some silently staring back at Chen Ge, their eyes brimming with the desire for annihilation.
