"Yes, Fan Yu's sister is a spider. The details are a bit complicated. If you have time, could you come to the welfare home today?"
"Sure, would six or seven this evening work?"
"No problem. Thank you for your cooperation."
After hanging up, Chen Ge replayed the welfare home worker's last words in his mind: "Fan Yu's sister is a spider?"
Fan Yu was the haunted house's first special visitor, and also an extremely pitiful child. He had witnessed his father murder his mother, then watched his aunt push his father into a well. And he himself had lived under the same roof as the killer for several years.
"That child has no family left in this world. No matter how you look at it, I should go check on him."
Originally Chen Ge had been planning to wash his face and head out into the sun to try his luck with the lottery, but after that phone call from the welfare home worker, his heart wasn't in it anymore.
The afternoon business hours began quickly. By five-thirty, they were swamped, and the number of visitors still hadn't dwindled. With no other choice, Chen Ge and the others had to extend the tour hours, not finishing until nearly seven o'clock.
The sky had already gone dark. Chen Ge didn't even have the energy to tally his ticket revenue. Once Xu Wan got off work, he hurried over to the welfare home.
This was Chen Ge's first time visiting the Jiujiang Children's Welfare Home. Unlike the cold, dirty, run-down orphanages he'd seen on television, the Jiujiang Children's Welfare Home was decorated very warmly. It had its own courtyard filled with all kinds of potted flowers and plants.
"Hey! What are you doing? Outsiders can't just walk in here." The elderly gatekeeper stopped Chen Ge.
"Hello, my name is Chen Ge. I'm Fan Yu's family. One of your workers called me to come over today."
"Fan Yu's family!" The old man looked Chen Ge over carefully, and his attitude shifted instantly. "Wait here, I'll go inside and ask."
The old man didn't bother with his phone — he just ran into the courtyard and shouted up toward the building.
Before long, a woman who appeared to be about Chen Ge's age walked out from inside. She wore a nurse's uniform, her features soft and gentle, giving off a very approachable vibe.
"Mr. Chen, you've finally arrived." The nurse gestured for Chen Ge to follow her. "Let me introduce myself first — I'm Fan Yu's 'Mom.' You can call me Xiao Liu."
"You're his mother?"
"Mm. We take in a lot of homeless children and abandoned babies here, and to help them feel more of a sense of family warmth, we usually just have them call us 'Mom' and 'Dad.' We don't force them on that, though — most of the kids do it voluntarily." The nurse was easy to talk to, though she was rather shy, unable to meet Chen Ge's eyes as she spoke.
"That's really wonderful, actually. I have a lot of respect for what you do." The Jiujiang Children's Welfare Home was like one big family — completely different from the orphanages Chen Ge had seen on television.
The nurse smiled brightly. She was just about to speak when a window on the other side of the courtyard opened. A middle-aged man holding a tea cup called out to her: "Xiao Liu! Off wandering around again? Get back inside, now! From now on, keep a tight watch on Jiang Ling and Fan Yu! Those two are getting more and more out of hand!"
The man's voice was clearly angry, but Xiao Liu didn't seem scared upon hearing it — just a little embarrassed. "Mm, got it."
