Chapter 58: An Idea

January 17, 2020 · 5 min read · 1,045 words

The next day, Monday morning.

Klein, who had the day off, did not go out. Instead, he gave his letter to his mentor, Cohen Quentin, along with extra postage fees, to Melissa, entrusting his sister to mail it at the post office near Tingen Technical School.

After breakfast, he leisurely made up for the sleep he had missed during his "work" hours, not getting up again until almost noon, when his stomach grumbled.

He reheated last night's leftovers, gnawed on a piece of oatmeal bread, and took a newspaper into the bathroom on the second floor.

Every time like this, he couldn't help but sigh about not having a phone.

Seven or eight minutes later, he came out refreshed, washed his hands, returned to his bedroom, and locked the door.

Then, Klein drew the curtains, lit the gas lamp, meditated for half an hour, practiced clairvoyance, pendulum, and divining rod for half an hour, and reviewed mystical knowledge for an hour through recall.

After doing all this, he shredded the old newspaper into more than a dozen pieces, wrote material names like "Moon Candle" and "Full Moon Essential Oil" on each, and simulated the ritual magic process step by step to master the details—before he truly became proficient and learned more, he couldn't rashly attempt ritual magic, as it would waste materials and easily attract danger.

Over and over, he picked up his silver pocket watch with vine-like patterns, clicked it open, and saw that it was just past 2:45 PM.

He thought for a few seconds, then took the shredded newspaper to the kitchen on the first floor to burn it, using this to adjust his state for the Tarot Club gathering.

After locking the bedroom door again, Klein didn't wait for three o'clock; he planned to enter the Gray Fog ahead of time.

He wanted to take this opportunity to thoroughly explore that place!

Just as Klein stood in the empty space in the room and was about to start walking counterclockwise, he suddenly connected his worries about whether "Justice" and "The Hanged Man" had entered a suitable environment and might be disturbed or discovered by others to one thing:

He had said he would come up with a way so that if "Justice" and "The Hanged Man" were truly unable to extricate themselves or encountered some other situation, they could "take leave" in advance and miss the meeting.

For the previous Klein, this was almost an impossible problem. He couldn't exactly handcraft a real-time communication network from another world, and wired telegraphy would expose himself.

Now, he suddenly found inspiration from ritual magic:

"Externally aided ritual magic all involves praying to different existences for help. The beginning of such incantations must have a clear target, such as the God of Night, the Crimson Lord, or descriptions of those unknown, hidden existences."

"So, can I modify the incantation to make the description target me?"

"Target me..."

"In this way, even if 'Justice' and 'The Hanged Man' perform the ritual in a foreign land, I can receive the corresponding information."

Klein's spirit suddenly lifted, and he began to analyze the feasibility of this method:

"Two difficulties. First, I am not a high-sequence powerhouse to a certain extent. Even if the incantation's description does target me, it's very unlikely that I can receive the 'request.'"

"Second, how to ensure that the description in the incantation precisely targets me, ensuring it doesn't deviate and hit some other unknown existence that matches the description, which would bring great danger."

Klein paced back and forth, pondering possible solutions.

His steps were soundless, and he circled around and around, naturally connecting this matter with the mystical world above the Gray Fog.

"I can't receive the 'request,' but that doesn't mean the Gray Fog can't. Its combination with the Crimson Star can directly 'pull' people into space, disregarding distance."

"I can consider associating myself with that mysterious space when making the targeted description..."

"According to this line of reasoning, although I can't immediately receive the 'request' when the other party performs the ritual, as long as I enter the Gray Fog, I will be able to see the corresponding information."

"Simply put, it's the difference between online and offline messages on QQ."

The more Klein thought about it, the more excited he became, feeling that this line of thought was worth trying.

"Hmm, what kind of description should I use to precisely target me and that Gray Fog world?" He began to consider the specific details.

Actually, he had an incantation that was sure to succeed: the pure Runish transliteration of "Fusheng Xuanhuang Tianzun," but the problem was that it would cause him to lose control over the Gray Fog and lose his dominant position, so he could only exclude it.

"...'The Fool from Another World'? No, that is precise enough, and almost no other existence would meet the conditions, but it would expose my biggest secret..." Klein thought of one incantation after another, but he rejected them all.

Seven or eight minutes later, he finally finalized the first descriptive passage in the incantation:

"The Fool that does not belong to this era."

This was clearly not precise enough, so Klein quickly added another passage:

"The Mysterious Ruler above the Gray Fog."

Combined, these two could almost limit it to himself, and they bound the Gray Fog and himself together.

"There's still a gap. It doesn't exclude the possibility that there are multiple spaces above the Gray Fog, multiple rulers, or that this description points to the spirit world..." Klein frowned, intending to add another layer of insurance.

Hmm... He deliberated for a full minute and finally thought of the last passage:

"The Yellow and Black King who wields good luck!"

This was an approximate literal translation of "Fusheng Xuanhuang Shangdi." If it were alone, it might deviate and attract unknown dangerous existences, but with the limits from the first two descriptions and the precedent of using similar incantations to enter the Gray Fog, the target would be completely locked.

Performing ritual magic according to these three descriptions, Klein didn't know if it would be effective, but he was certain it would not attract the attention of other existences, nor would it put "Justice" and "The Hanged Man" in danger.
