Chapter 869: Pretense

January 17, 2020 · 5 min read · 988 words

Lei Lin regarded himself in the mirror, quite satisfied with his new appearance.

Originally, he had possessed the standard Western features of the World of the Gods — brilliant golden curls and striking azure pupils.

But now, the golden curls had all turned black. His eyes held a dense, impenetrable darkness, and even the whites had turned blood-red. An evil aura constantly emanated from his body.

"With this level of transformation, I'm afraid no one would be able to connect me to the young master of the Faolan family…"

Lei Lin placed a silver, grotesque mask over his face, and his entire figure vanished into the darkness.

Such a physical disguise was, of course, far from enough.

Therefore, after Lei Lin stepped out of the shadows, his entire body underwent an even more terrifying transformation.

A thread of mystical, enigmatic power, carrying a dim luminescence, constantly floated and shifted around his body, suffused with the resonance of the power of law.

Once this radiance merged with his being, Lei Lin now resembled a demon straight from hell — even his soul aura had completely changed.

A sense of overwhelming power and danger constantly radiated from him.

The surrounding air slightly indented, as if being directly devoured by something.

Divinity! Only the power of divinity could accomplish this!

And Lei Lin had now become a divine being who commanded a sliver of Devouring divinity!

"Hmm! Not a bad imitation!" Lei Lin examined himself, nodding with satisfaction.

His comprehension of the Devouring law had already reached an exceedingly profound level. All he needed was the final thread of Beilusebabu's true divinity and the power of a divine spark, and he could advance at any time to the Rule realm of a seventh-level Wizard — which was to say, a deity of the World of the Gods!

Comprehension of the laws did not vanish with reincarnation.

While condensing a thread of divinity from nothing remained exceedingly difficult, simulating the bearing and appearance of a being possessed of Devouring divinity was simplicity itself for Lei Lin, who possessed the Chip.

"In the World of the Gods, I absolutely cannot ascend to godhood through the Devouring law — it would far too easily draw the alertness and attention of the gods. Moreover, the power of Devouring in this world has already been consigned to the devil faction. The moment I successfully ascend, I'd likely be dragged straight into Hell. While I will have to go there eventually, I can't afford to be so passive about it…"

Furthermore, assuming this form carried yet another advantage.

Beings possessed of divinity always possessed a high resistance to prophetic magic, to say nothing of Lei Lin, a visitor from another world entirely. If his enemies hoped to use divination and fortune-telling to uncover specific information about him, they were utterly delusional.

"The show begins…"

Lei Lin gazed at the luminous moonlight suspended in the sky, and his figure suddenly turned translucent before vanishing into the darkness.

One of Beelzebub's true spirit avatars and the vast majority of its divine nature had been devoured by Lei Lin's true body, along with hundreds of thousands of years' worth of memories as a devil. As a result, all of its followers were completely helpless before Lei Lin.

Whether it was their methods of contact, their usual personalities and habits, or even the lists of bishops and devil priests stationed across the various regions of the Material World, a copy of everything had been stored in Lei Lin's Chip.

To him, Beelzebub's faithful had nowhere to hide.

Thus, after merely strolling through Dark Forest Castle for a few rounds during the day, Lei Lin already had a clear picture of the situation.

Now, disguised as a being possessed of divinity, Lei Lin arrived before a sprawling estate.

Even at the front gate, two guards stood faithfully on watch, diligently carrying out their duty to protect the premises.

"Even the local magistrate has been subverted. No wonder they dare act so brazenly — they're even preparing to conduct a blood sacrifice of an entire city…"

Lei Lin clasped his hands behind his back and strode into the estate with an air of utter nonchalance.

The moment he crossed into the estate's grounds, a palpable aura of evil assaulted his senses, drawing an involuntary deep breath from Lei Lin.

This kind of refined soul perception would have been utterly impossible to achieve without the Devouring divinity he happened to carry at this moment.

Evil energy swirled constantly around Lei Lin's body, causing the radiance he emitted to shine all the more brilliantly. That wisp of false divinity, in particular, even showed signs of the counterfeit becoming genuine.

Beyond Divine Sight!

Drawing upon the power of his Magic divinity, Lei Lin directly activated a quasi-spell ability, rendering the strict surveillance utterly blind to his presence.

After slipping past the outer guards, Lei Lin followed his instincts and discovered a downward passage concealed behind an ornamental garden rockery that was clearly nothing more than a facade.

"The scent of human blood… and… the aura of lesser devils…"

Lei Lin twitched his nose, then descended the passage without the slightest hesitation.

"Who goes there?!"

This commotion finally alerted one of the guards. His voice was deliberately muffled, clearly intending to avoid raising an alarm.

But in the darkness, several otherworldly creatures had already crept up without a sound, obviously planning a sneak attack.

By the time these creatures closed in on Lei Lin, it gave him a feeling that was more amusing than exasperating. "This is your trump card, Devil Priest? Relying on such pathetic, lesser devils? It's practically an insult to me!!!"

Through his darkvision, he had already seen what the attackers were—mangled human bodies and heads that looked like shambling, lumpy flesh-heaps.

These were Lesser Devils, the most inferior of all devils, and the most common cannon fodder throughout all nine layers of Hell.
