"I was already behind you!" Li Po's voice calmed down a bit after hearing Xiao Gou's — after all, what was in front of him was a person, not something else entirely.
"Still, what you're saying doesn't add up, but..." Xiao Gou glanced toward the corner ahead and dropped his voice to a whisper. "That's not how the script goes."
"I know, but you'd have to take that up with Cui Ming. I only started heading your way because I saw him coming toward me." Li Po felt wronged. He had absolutely no idea what was going on.
"Looks like something's gone wrong on Cui Ming's end.
Bracing one hand against the wall, he groped his way through the darkness. When Xiao Gou reached the corner where
"The height hasn't changed — this is
"Li Po?"
Before Li Po could react,
"Wh-what is it?" Li Po snatched his hand back and stammered.
"Something's off. When I came over just now, there was someone standing in this corner. She was shorter than Cui Ming, but it wasn't Li Po. I think the haunted house actors have started moving — someone has slipped in among us."
"An extra person? A haunted house actor got in?" Li Po stared at
"I'm not lying to you. Everyone be careful."
"Mm." Xiao Gou nodded. Once
"Can you hear me?" Facing the corner, Xiao Gou shielded the glow of his phone with his clothing and whispered into the monitoring room.
"Copy." A middle-aged man's voice came through the earpiece. "I was actually about to reach out to you. Why aren't you following the script? I had someone specifically design this scare system — it's what makes this game truly terrifying. Stop fooling around, get back into position, and follow the original script."
"Boss, I think something unexpected has happened over here. Did you send someone else in?"
"What? No." The middle-aged man on the other end sounded baffled, having no idea what Xiao Gou was talking about. "Keep your voice down — you'll blow your cover. If something really happens, I'll let you know."
Xiao Gou still wasn't reassured and pressed further: "Boss, I'm not sure where everyone is right now. Can you check the monitors and tell me who's in this room?"
"You've rehearsed this enough times and still can't remember?" The middle-aged man's tone was growing impatient. "Right now you're standing to the right of the blackboard, near the door. Li Po is to the left of the blackboard. Cui Ming is in the far corner at the back of the classroom.
"Don't worry, Boss. I've got everyone's position pinned down. I'll follow the script right now." The moment Xiao Gou finished speaking, footsteps rang out from the very last row of the classroom.
They weren't trying to be subtle. They were perfectly ordinary, unmistakable footsteps.
"Someone moved?" Because of the nature of the game, there was no light whatsoever in the classroom. Xiao Gou could only barely make out what seemed like a shadow moving in the back.
"No — the four of you are all still standing in your corners. Nobody's moved." The middle-aged man was watching the monitors and feeding Xiao Gou information through the earpiece. His intentions were good, but his words at that moment delivered to Xiao Gou an indescribable sense of horror.
Footsteps echoing through a silent classroom. Someone on the last row was definitely moving!
"Boss, let me ask you one more time. You didn't send anyone else in?"
"No. All four of you are still standing in your corners. Nobody has moved. Why do you sound so weird today? Are you feeling okay? Did your mom chew you out again?" The middle-aged man was growing increasingly irritated.
On the monitors, all four people were standing in their respective corners, not moving. But inside the classroom, footsteps could be heard!
There was now a fifth person in this room!
