About half an hour later, Captain Yan's people arrived after being notified — the Third Ward case had always been under their jurisdiction.
"You're
"Yes." Chen Ge had never seen this person before. He probably wasn't from the city precinct.
"Come with us. Until the victim regains consciousness, your safety will be our responsibility." His words were polite, but his tone left no room for argument.
Chen Ge saw Captain Li quietly signal him with a small gesture and relaxed, following the group to the hospital.
At eleven thirty that night,
When Chen Ge had knocked down the crazy woman, he had still retained a sliver of consciousness and had faintly caught a glimpse of Chen Ge's figure.
In a situation that was virtually a death sentence, to cheat death and come out alive — this rollercoaster of an experience was something Gu Feiyu would never forget for the rest of his life.
At his insistent request, the police officer in the ward tracked down Chen Ge and arranged for the two to meet.
Seeing Chen Ge again, Gu Feiyu's expression and tone were nothing like their first encounter. The kid turned out to be someone who understood loyalty and gratitude — he gripped Chen Ge's hand and poured his heart out with words of sincere gratitude.
Watching all this, the police gradually let go of their suspicion toward Chen Ge. The tall young man who had led the group showered him with praise, complimenting him so effusively that Chen Ge grew a little embarrassed.
Just before midnight, Chen Ge walked out of the hospital. He stood at the empty, silent intersection and gazed at the city shrouded in darkness.
"I should tell them." Taking out his phone and that half-sheet of advertisement paper, Chen Ge dialed Captain Yan's number.
"Little Chen?"
"Captain Yan, there's something I need to tell you."
"Is it about the patient in Room Two? Someone already reported to me. You saved a life — well done." Captain Yan shifted his tone. "However, I don't approve of your unauthorized investigation. You're practically gambling with your own safety."
"Don't worry. Finding the Room Two patient today was just an accident. It probably won't happen again." Chen Ge's voice was a little hoarse. "What I wanted to tell you about is something else. When I was eavesdropping on the Room Two patient, I heard her mention a special organization called the Urban Legends Association."
"The Urban Legends Association?"
"That's right. From the name it sounds like a ghost story fan club, but unlike made-up ghost stories, the ones they tell are things that actually happened."
"While you were eavesdropping, who was the Room Two patient talking to? Did her phone have any record of the caller?" Captain Yan sounded puzzled.
"She wasn't on a call. This madwoman has another personality hidden inside her — a sister. You could think of it as her talking to herself." Chen Ge pocketed the half-sheet of advertisement paper printed with the blood-red door. "I suspect this association was created by the Third Ward patients, and that the crazy woman might have been one of its members."
"A ghost story club founded by a bunch of madmen?" Captain Yan thought for a moment, then said gravely, "I'll have my people keep an eye out. If you come across any more information about this, be sure to let me know immediately."
"Will do."
Hanging up, Chen Ge pulled his collar tighter. "They have to tell one true urban legend every week. What happens if they can't? Do they have to go out and create one themselves?"
