Chapter 2860: Aftermath

January 17, 2020 · 5 min read · 1,090 words

The battle ended quickly. The demon race had already been at a tremendous disadvantage, suffering countless casualties. Shaya had pinned all her hopes on Yang Kai, but at the final moment, Yang Kai—who had seemed utterly loyal—delivered the deadliest blow against her.

Without their commander, the demon forces fell into complete disarray. There was no coordination between their units; they only knew to charge blindly in every direction, which only made it easier for the barbarian warriors to cut down their lives one by one.

By the time Yang Kai returned to the battlefield with the twins, the situation had already become a one-sided rout.

The light of sorcery flickered and bloomed continuously as one demon after another fell. Even the most powerful among them could not so much as stir a ripple against a barbarian army united in purpose and morale.

The sand demons, masters of escape, tried to flee for their lives—only to find that the earth no longer sheltered them. The vast ground had been stained gold by the glow of sorcery, and no matter what innate powers they invoked, they could not burrow away. One by one, they were annihilated. The shadow demons, who came and went without a trace, had likewise lost their edge. Under the enhancement of Hawk Eye, the aerial cavalry could locate their positions with pinpoint precision, loosing arrow after lethal arrow. And that most formidable demon cavalry unit had long since been completely wiped out, leaving behind nothing but a handful of demonic beasts shrieking on the battlefield.

Screams echoed endlessly across the wasteland, chilling all who heard them to the bone.

This was a victory for the barbarians—a victory for the Witch Bull Clan—and a brilliant, resounding triumph at that!

When the last demon commoner fell, every barbarian stood gasping for breath, eyes burning red as they surveyed their surroundings. Not a single enemy could be seen anywhere.

Between heaven and earth, only a grim killing aura remained.

The clansmen stood amid mountains of corpses and seas of blood, like invincible war gods, majestic and untouchable.

One warrior raised his weapon high above his head and howled toward the sky, venting the exhilaration and joy surging in his heart.

More and more clansmen answered him. The continuous chorus of roars was enough to make heaven and earth change color and the sun and moon lose their light.

Yang Kai, shrouded in a cloak of dark energy, flew up into the air and swept his gaze across the battlefield. His divine sense meticulously probed every corner within dozens of miles in every direction. Only after confirming there were no stragglers did he call out, "Clean up the battlefield and tally the wounded!"

Ten standard squads received the order and immediately set to work under the leadership of their squad leaders.

After this battle, everyone held their commander in the highest possible regard.

The dozen or so witches, however, regarded Yang Kai with a measure of concern. After all, the demonic energy on Lord Witch Bull's body was unmistakably obvious, and no one knew whether he might truly be corrupted into a demon. If that were to happen, then this victory would become entirely meaningless.

If even their commander had been turned into a demon, no victory however great would matter.

As though sensing their thoughts, Yang Kai cast a glance their way. But he offered little in the way of explanation, instead saying, "Yulu, take a team and inspect the demon lair over there. That will be our base of operations for the coming months."

"Yes!" The twins received their orders and immediately led the guard unit toward the demon lair.

Before long, the casualty figures from the battle were tallied. The Witch Bull Clan had fielded close to three thousand fighters. A little over two hundred had fallen—roughly equivalent to the loss of one standard squad. Nearly everyone else had sustained some form of injury. Such losses could only be called a miracle. If Shaya's strategy hadn't been so poorly coordinated and she hadn't been so overconfident, the barbarian side would never have gotten off so lightly.

She had staked everything on Yang Kai, and the result had left her bitterly disappointed.

As for the demons killed in this battle, their number had already exceeded three thousand, with additional prisoners taken as well.

True demon commoners would never have been captured—they had all been wiped out long ago. The prisoners were demons converted by demonic energy, who had once been members of the barbarian tribes. Shaya had dispatched them as vanguard forces, and they had been the first to encounter the Witch Bull Clan head-on in battle.

Although Yang Kai had warned his clansmen before the fight to show no mercy, many still chose to grievously wound rather than kill these former kin.

As a result, a good number of the converted clansmen survived, though they remained entangled in demonic energy and possessed precious little rationality.

The dozen or so witches gathered together, seemingly working on a way to save these clansmen. It remained to be seen what kind of results or progress they would achieve.

Beyond these demonified clansmen, the Witch Bull Clan had also captured several dozen demonic beasts in this battle. The method for handling demonic beasts was considerably simpler—when Yang Kai had previously gone to scout for intelligence, he had already brought back a demonic beast from the demon lair.

After repeated experiments, the witches were delighted to discover that the Beast Taming Art actually worked on demonic beasts as well.

Although demonic beasts were harder to tame than ordinary spirit beasts, as long as the Beast Taming Art functioned on them, these creatures could serve as mounts for the Witch Bull Clan. Several dozen demonic beasts would be more than enough to form a small cavalry unit.

The impressive bearing of the aerial cavalry had long since filled the other clansmen with envy, and the awe-inspiring sight of the demon cavalry charging in formation had been lodged firmly in their minds. Naturally, they had fantasized about one day being able to do the same.

And now, that opportunity had arrived.

Still, several dozen demonic beasts was a rather modest number relative to an army of three thousand. Moreover, not just anyone could ride these creatures. Even if the witches could use the Beast Taming Art to tame them, the demonic energy on their bodies could not be dispelled. To ride one, a person first needed the ability to withstand the erosion of that demonic energy.
