Chapter 88: Report

January 17, 2020 · 5 min read · 1,056 words

“What is it?” Benson asked casually.

Melissa, on the other hand, looked seriously at her brother, because she felt that Klein’s behavior tonight was equally strange, only slightly better than Elizabeth and the later Selena.

Klein had already prepared his excuse. He chuckled and said:

“There’s an error in a description in a document, and I’ve told my colleague to submit it as soon as he arrives at the company tomorrow morning. So, either I go over there now to fix it, or I wake up at least half an hour early tomorrow. Without a doubt, I choose the former.”

“I always thought you weren’t concentrating enough on the card game, but it turns out you were thinking about work,” Benson said with sudden realization, then laughed. “No, I apologize, I should have said this: playing cards helps with thinking.”

“Alright, we’ll wait for you.” Melissa withdrew her scrutinizing gaze and raised her hand to adjust the ruffles on her leg-of-mutton sleeve.

Since the scheduled tram and trolleybus services had long since ended, the three siblings had no choice but to hire a rental carriage nearby after saying their goodbyes. It cost 2 Soule for 45 minutes.

“I’ve heard that every rental carriage driver will randomly inflate their prices.” Benson grumbled in a low voice after paying out most of his winnings with a pained heart.

Klein smiled and said:

“I think it’s acceptable. It’s almost eleven o’clock now.”

“I was just joking. My thought right now is that we could actually hire it jointly with other passengers. In 45 minutes, we could reach a lot of places.” Benson looked at the people outside the window who were continuously hiring carriages.

I get it, carpooling… Klein rubbed the silver inlay on the top of his cane and said:

“We don’t have a problem, but the other passengers might, Benson. Haven’t you noticed? They are all very particular about their image, very concerned with the matter of ‘decency’. I think this might be a common trait of the middle class.”

“Hmm.” Benson nodded seriously. “The Woods’ household is also more extravagant than I imagined, but old Wood’s salary is only 4 pounds a week… Hah, decency is probably the biggest difference between some middle-class people and curly-haired baboons.”

What did the curly-haired baboons ever do to you… Klein barely managed to suppress his laughter.

Melissa did not join their discussion. She sat in her seat, occasionally glancing at Klein, making him feel a little creeped out.

The light two-wheeled carriage sped quickly through the quiet, dim streets, reaching Zouteland Street in just 12 minutes.

“Wait for me here. Five minutes, no more than five minutes, and I’ll be back.” Klein emphasized, put on his top hat, took his cane, and stepped out of the carriage.

Since the charge was based on time rather than distance, the carriage driver had no objections to waiting.

Going up the stairs, Klein arrived outside the Blackthorn Security Company and knocked heavily on the door.

In less than ten seconds, the door swung inward, revealing Leonard Mitchell, who was wearing a vest and a shirt.

“You don’t have the night shift tonight,” Leonard said with slight surprise.

Klein only had to take the shift guarding the Chanis Gate once a week, and could maintain a normal schedule the rest of the time. As for emergencies at night, they were handled by the “Sleepless” who loved the night.

But only sleeping two or three hours a day leads to hair loss and memory loss… Whenever he thought about this, Klein couldn’t help but jokingly complain about his captain, Dunn Smith.

“I have something to report,” he said simply.

“A mission?” Leonard stepped aside from the door and casually asked.

As soon as Klein entered the reception hall, he saw Dunn, wearing a black trench coat, coming out. His gray eyes were as deep as ever.

“Captain, I encountered a supernatural event.”

“Specifics,” Dunn directly asked.

Klein recounted the previous events and his handling of them exactly as they happened:

“…Therefore, I believe it’s necessary to investigate Haines Vansant.”

He had thought that since the evil entity summoned by the “Mirror Divination” hadn’t caused a massacre yet, and hadn’t given him an extremely dangerous warning, it meant that it might still need time, or was unwilling to wake up early or take full control of Selena. Therefore, as long as its purpose wasn’t directly revealed, the evil entity would definitely choose to wait and see first. Under such circumstances, it wouldn’t be too difficult for Elizabeth to trick Selena to the bedroom door.

“You handled it very well, seizing the moment before the evil spirit had fully descended and possessed her.” Dunn nodded slightly. “Leave the subsequent investigation to us. You can go back and rest.”

Klein breathed a sigh of relief and chuckled:

“I thought you were going to make this my initiation mission and let me complete it alone.”

Judging from the incantation provided by Elizabeth, Haines Vansant is quite dangerous…

“That’s because your initiation mission is already set,” the casual and freewheeling Leonard laughed beside him.

“What?” Klein was taken aback.

Dunn curled his lips and explained in a mellow voice:

“Around seven in the evening, we received a case transferred from the police station. We’ve initially confirmed it’s not dangerous and not urgent, so we planned to let you handle it alone tomorrow.”

“Alright, don’t ask what the case is. Get a good night’s sleep tonight. Your day off is moved to Tuesday or Wednesday.”

Captain, this makes me even less able to sleep… Also, Monday afternoon is the date for the Tarot Gathering… Should I send a “delay” message to “Justice” and “The Hanged Man” in advance? Klein shook his head wryly and took his leave.

As he exited the stairwell, he suddenly sensed something and looked up at the carriage his family had hired. He saw Melissa quietly observing him through the window.

As their eyes met, Melissa immediately turned her head and sat upright.

Klein twitched the corner of his mouth, pretending nothing had happened, and got into the carriage.

Under the crimson moon and the pure night sky, the two-wheeled carriage drove swiftly, crossing street after street.

After returning home, Klein let Benson take a shower first. He went to Melissa’s bedroom door and knocked twice.
