Chapter 55: The Roland Eagle

January 17, 2020 · 4 min read · 870 words

The next morning, Leilin was led by the waiter to Roland City's mercenary market.

The mercenary market was located right next to the Lord's Manor, so security was quite good—at least Leilin didn't see any brawls.

Along the way, many people looked at Leilin's group, especially showing interest in Anna who followed behind him. After all, Anna was an outstanding beauty, and she looked even more beautiful after being dressed up. Fortunately, they were somewhat wary of Gorin in his iron armor, so nothing untoward happened.

"My Lord! This is our Roland City's mercenary market. You can find the personnel you need here, and you can also post some tasks..." the waiter introduced to Leilin and his two companions.

As for Fuleisa, Leilin had him stay at the inn to watch over the carriage and everyone's luggage.

Although the important Magic Stones and materials Leilin carried with him, losing some gold coins would be troublesome.

Leilin surveyed the mercenary market before him.

What met his eyes was a large square, where coachmen or mercenaries squatted in small groups on the ground, waiting to be hired.

Leilin knew there must also be a slave market here, but it couldn't be openly displayed. After all, even the Wizard Market had to be conducted secretly.

However, in Leilin's plan, the people recruited here were just peripheral personnel, so the requirements could be lowered a bit.

"Young sir, is there anything I can assist you with?" When Leilin entered the market, a circle of merchants and middlemen surrounded him, clearly dazzled by his luxurious attire, and they pushed their wares with strained voices.

"I need a team of mercenaries to escort me to Polar Night City and guard my assets there for at least two years!" Leilin stated his requirements to the eager merchants.

After arriving on this continent, Leilin discovered that the mercenary guilds and assassin guilds from his previous world's novels were all nonsense.

Except for some large cities Leilin hadn't visited and couldn't comment on, in Roland or smaller cities, there weren't any guilds at all.

All hiring, assassinations, or other tasks were contracted out by local taverns or merchants, with locations that varied greatly.

"After all, you have to consider costs. If income isn't even enough to maintain a guild, no fool would throw gold coins into the water!"

"Then may I ask, what are your requirements for the guards' numbers and strength?" A bald merchant with a shiny oily face pushed aside a thin man next to him and asked loudly.

"Numbers? Around ten to fifteen! Strength just needs to be at a standard guard level. The only requirement I have is loyalty and credibility! Because the mission lasts over two years, I will sign a contract, and pay a salary each month!"

Leilin said calmly.

"In that case, I happen to have a mercenary group that meets your standards!" The bald merchant smiled.

"The Roland Eagle Mercenary Group just finished their vacation, and they are all native Rolanians. Their credibility is completely guaranteed!" the bald merchant introduced.

Leilin noticed that when the bald man mentioned the Roland Eagle Mercenary Group, the surrounding crowd quieted down, and several people showed admiration and respect in their eyes. It seemed the Roland Eagle had a very high reputation here.

"Good then! Take me to meet them. Your commission won't be lacking afterwards!" Leilin said.

"Please follow me!" The bald merchant led the way, taking Leilin and the others out of the market.

The inn's waiter had already left after receiving his gold coins. Anna and Gorin followed closely behind Leilin. The group of four walked and looked around for about half an hour before arriving in the southern district.

Here, the surrounding architectural style subtly changed. If the city center was modeled after the Lord's Manor with extremely solemn and majestic buildings, the houses in the southern district were colorful and varied in style, giving off a very common citizen feel.

"This should be the gathering place for the city's free citizens!" Leilin looked at the cobblestone ground, and the small flower beds and stone lamp stands along the roadside, muttering to himself.

"My Lord has a good eye! Most of the people living here are small merchants and free citizens of Roland City. The leader of the Roland Eagle Mercenary Group also lives here!"

"Aren't you taking us to the mercenary group's training grounds or something?" Gorin suddenly asked from the side.

"My respected sir! The Roland Eagle is just a small mercenary group, with numbers never exceeding thirty. Their fame only spreads around Roland City. It's just a loose alliance initiated by the captain. Just the cost of renting a venue would make their entire mission earnings go down the drain. Who would be willing to do that?" the bald merchant said with a bitter smile.

"Normally, the team members all do their own thing. Only when they receive a task do they gather together!" At this point, the bald man suddenly looked at Leilin and smiled ingratiatingly: "Although the Roland Eagle has relatively few members, most of them are retired veterans, and the captain once served as a company commander in the army. His strength is quite good..."
