Chapter 72: Premonition (Third Update)

Inside the High Council conference room.

After Lucian remained silent, Vincent spoke up: "Arcane Magic must be built upon an understandable, visualizable foundation. Things that cannot be imagined or comprehended can only be complex mathematical processes. Therefore, Brooke and , congratulations—this is the true foundation of New Alchemy, the orthodox theory of the microscopic domain. Your work has brought us back to solid ground, rather than wandering through a labyrinth of matrices, floating without any roots."

"Nonsense. The true foundation of Arcane Magic is observability. Things that cannot be observed are meaningless to us, and there is certainly no need to force an image upon them." Fernando declared with a storm-like intensity, articulating the viewpoint he had shifted to in recent years.

Lucian added: "Rashly applying imagery from the macroscopic world to the microscopic domain violates basic logic and will lead to serious problems."

"Regardless, electrons have indeed demonstrated wave nature." Oliver joined the debate.

Just as the spectacle of numerous demiplanes descending and anomalous phenomena appearing seemed about to unfold once more, gently tapped the table: "The debate over the wave equation can wait until after the meeting. Let us observe five minutes of silence for first. We will make the Lord of pay the price."

Lucian closed his eyes and began the moment of silence, hoping his conjecture about the nature of the soul was correct. If so, then...

The subsequent High Council meeting discussed the Church of Truth, , and . They largely agreed upon the proposals from Douglas, Fernando, and Lucian—using stories mixing truth and falsehood in broadcasts to undermine the foundation of faith and confuse Viken, making him believe that the Magic Council had not discovered the most fundamental secret, nor had reached any cooperative agreement with the monsters. At the same time, they would conceal core intelligence and secretly win over and sow division among the Cardinals, to be deployed at a critical moment.

Since matters worthy of submission to the High Council were few to begin with, the meeting concluded in less than an hour. Helen, who had remained in a learning state throughout, suddenly looked up: "If the New Alchemy system based on the Oliver-Brooke wave equation is consistent with all current experiments and can equally solve the previous problems, what does that imply?"

She rarely asked such earnest questions during meetings. When they had been discussing Viken earlier, she had already been notably allocating her attention to listen.

"Different theories being able to explain the same phenomenon simultaneously suggests they must be equivalent to some degree." Hathaway appeared to have been pondering this for some time. "Since both wave nature and particle nature are characteristics and properties of electrons, then matrix mechanics and wave mechanics could potentially be equivalent."

Douglas, Fernando, Chelsea, , and the others nodded in agreement: "A proof can be given."

"With mathematical methods, it should be possible." Brooke thought for a moment and nodded as well.

Oliver thought it was possible but was rather reluctant. In his view, matrix mechanics should be a special manifestation of the wave nature in wave mechanics.

After some further discussion, the High Council members departed one after another. Lucian and his teacher Fernando were the last to leave.

"I feel that Oliver's interpretation of the arcane significance of the wave function has some issues. This would lead to self-contradictions when resolving the atomic model. Let's see how Oliver explains it." Fernando pondered solemnly.

Lucian gave a slight nod: "The interpretation of the arcane significance of the wave function must be combined with experimental phenomena."

---

At the beginning of the Harvest Moon (September), inside a classroom at Holt Magic Academy.

Low-ranking mages Honore and Clark waited alongside numerous classmates for "Academic Affairs" teacher Ernesto to distribute copies of Arcane, Arcane Magic, Nature, and other journals. Standing at the podium was , the instructor for this "Fundamentals of New Alchemy" class. Her complexion seemed rather off—her eyes were fixed on the ground, her feet shuffling back and forth as though preparing to crush a pile of ants.

"Teacher Heidi doesn't seem very happy?" Clark whispered carefully to Honore. It wasn't that he had sharp eyes; it was just that Heidi was being far too obvious about it.

Honore shook his head: "I'm not familiar with Teacher Heidi—how would I know what's going on with her? Maybe her research results at the Atomic Institute were refuted by Lord Evans, or perhaps she had a falling out with a friend. It's hard to say. Surely it can't be that we're changing the New Alchemy textbooks again?"

"Heh, how is that possible? Anyway, just be careful during class and don't set Teacher Heidi off." Clark couldn't be bothered to think further and warned Honore.

Although Heidi strove to imitate Lucian's teaching style, everyone had their own personality. Over time, she had earned the additional nickname of "Smiling Devil."

Just then, Ernesto walked in carrying a storage bag filled with journals, his expression remarkably peculiar. In a somewhat restrained voice, he said: "Collect your journals in orderly fashion."

After the electron diffraction experiment last time, Honore had grown familiar with Ernesto. Seeing his expression, a guess formed in his mind: "Could it be that there's another groundbreaking theory or experimental result?"

Taking the three journals, Honore hadn't even returned to his seat before eagerly flipping through them. In the very first paper of Arcane, he found the answer: "The Wave Equation of Microscopic Particles and the Fundamental Questions of Quantum Mechanics," by Edwin Brooke and Oliver Constantine.

"The wave equation, the wave function..." Although Honore had believed after the electron diffraction experiment that a wave function would eventually appear, seeing it with his own eyes still shook him to the core. Real, tangible microscopic particles actually possessed a wave function! It was simply unbelievable!

No wonder Teacher Heidi's complexion was off! He suddenly gained a clear understanding of why.
