Chapter Twenty-Two: Surprising Discovery

January 17, 2020 · 6 min read · 1,148 words

The Five Boundary Mountain Range. Five streams of radiant light, rising skyward year-round.

The entire mountain range was divided into five clearly distinct territories by these multicolored lights.

The violet-black radiance was the imitation Southern Border Miasma Boundary Wall, once forged by the Restriction Master Tao Zhu. The cyan-green mountains were an imitation of the Northern Plains Sweetgrass Boundary Wall. The crimson portions originated from the Scorching Flame Boundary Wall of the Western Desert. The deep blue came from the Azure Waters Boundary Wall of the Eastern Sea.

As for the white-gold mountains, those were the Central Continent Sage Boundary Wall.

Qi Zai, a Seventh Transformation Qi Path Gu Immortal, was now dead within the white-gold territory of the Five Boundary Mountain Range.

Fang Yuan exhaled a mouthful of turbid air and drew the Flying Sword Immortal Gu from where it was embedded between Qi Zai's brows.

The Flying Sword Immortal Gu had originally shone with brilliant silver light, but at this moment it was dim and devoid of luster, emanating not a trace of aura.

This was the Immortal Killer Move — Dark Divergence Kill!

This move was extraordinarily concealed. When activated, it released none of the aura typical of a Seventh Transformation Immortal Killer Move, making it completely undetectable to outsiders.

Once launched, the sword strike was impossibly fast — quicker than lightning.

Its only drawback was the extremely narrow range of attack. It had to be within a hundred steps of the user.

This distance was simply too short.

Compared to ordinary Immortal Killer Moves that could strike across hundreds or even thousands of miles, it was entirely incomparable.

That was why Fang Yuan had not hesitated to take risks, using Familiar Meeting to disguise his identity and deliberately approach Qi Zai. The closer the distance, the greater the chance of killing him.

To that end, Fang Yuan had even deliberately engaged Qi Zai in combat and taken injuries at his hands, all to dispel Qi Zai's suspicions as much as possible.

Qi Zai's death under this move was not unjust.

After all, what Fang Yuan had used to deceive him was none other than the famous Familiar Meeting.

Although it was not the genuine article, its core was still the Eighth Transformation Attitude Gu. When this Gu was activated, it directly influenced the human heart, making others perceive Fang Yuan's "attitude." It was extremely difficult to grow suspicious.

Though Qi Zai was cautious and it had been hard to find any flaws in him personally, given Fang Yuan's shrewd cunning, he had gradually seen through Qi He's shallow nature during their previous exchanges.

By exploiting Qi He, Fang Yuan had taken a gamble and killed a Seventh Transformation powerful enemy with only a Sixth Transformation cultivation base.

This battle achievement was truly impressive. If it had been any ordinary Sixth Transformation Gu Immortal, they would have been itching to broadcast it to the world.

But at this moment, Fang Yuan merely let out a breath of relief, without the slightest trace of pride or self-satisfaction.

Since his rebirth, he had experienced a great deal. After witnessing Demon Venerable Specter battling against the Calamity, killing a Seventh Transformation Gu Immortal was, in his eyes, nothing more than a trivial matter.

"If you hadn't chased me so relentlessly, I wouldn't have risked assassinating you. Fine then — let me see why you were so determined to hunt me to the very end."

Fang Yuan reached out with an empty grasp, pulling Qi Zai's soul directly from his corpse.

Qi Zai had cultivated the Qi Path, so his soul was nothing special — merely an ordinary Gu Immortal's soul, unremarkable in every way.

With his mortal lamp extinguished, he was no specter of the Shadow Sect or anything of the sort. Though his soul burned with unwilling rage and struggled with all its might, it could only submit to Fang Yuan's every whim.

Fang Yuan examined it first, and once he confirmed there was nothing wrong with the soul, he stuffed it directly into his Ninety-Five Supreme True Immortal aperture.

Once inside the aperture, a massive swarm of Soul Path Gu Insects surged toward Qi Zai's soul.

Soul Search!

While conducting the soul search, Fang Yuan simultaneously continued activating Meeting Deja Vu, gradually transforming himself into Qi Zai's appearance.

He certainly hadn't forgotten — there was still a Sixth Transformation Gu Immortal, Qi He, waiting outside.

Killing her would surely be easier than Qi Zai. But to ensure success and play it safe, Fang Yuan decided to employ the same tactic once more — ambush and assassinate Qi He as well.

His version of Meeting Deja Vu was not the original. Lacking the Transformation Immortal Gu, he had to make do with several thousand Mortal Path auxiliary Gu as a rough substitute.

Because of this, changing his disguised appearance was not instantaneous — it required some effort.

After he successfully transformed into Qi Zai's likeness, he stored away Qi Zai's corpse and calmly flew out of the Five Realms Mountain Range.

However, by the time he tracked down Qi He, she was already dead.

The one who killed Qi He was none other than the wild beast beneath her — the Qi Sect Lion.

It turned out the Qi Sect Lion had originally been under Qi Zai's control and subjugation. But the moment Qi Zai died, the Qi Sect Lion returned to freedom.

Having been whipped and driven by Qi Zai into a relentless gallop, the beast had long since grown ravenous.

Had Qi He cultivated any other path, she might still have had a chance to survive. But she happened to be a Qi Path Gu Immortal, her body brimming with Qi Path Dao Marks and overflowing with Qi aura — to the Qi Sect Lion, she was the most exquisite delicacy imaginable.

And so, with the beast starving and freed from all restraint, it turned on its rider without hesitation.

Qi He had only just recently advanced to Gu Immortal. She was no match for the Qi Sect Lion at all. After struggling for merely a few rounds, she was killed, chewed up, and swallowed.

A pitiful end. She had spent her life in bitter cultivation, only to barely achieve immortality. She had just caught a glimpse of the Gu Immortal world's splendor, and before she could even begin to enjoy it, she perished in the jaws of a wild beast.

Fang Yuan caught up to the Qi Sect Lion and, using his Flying Sword Immortal Gu, dispatched it with just two or three strikes, piercing clean through its head.

The brilliantly shining Flying Sword Immortal Gu thrashed wildly inside the Qi Sect Lion's skull. The beast shrieked in unbearable agony, plummeting from the sky and crashing to the ground. It let out a series of wretched, blood-curdling howls before finally going still, dying completely.
