Chapter 448: A Split Second from Death

March 23, 2017 · 3 min read · 658 words

The flame serpent was about to swallow Shi Feng whole.

All of a sudden, Shi Feng looked up at the flame serpent, opened his mouth, and unleashed Dragon's Breath. A deafening dragon's roar erupted forth, and a shockwave slammed into the flame serpent.

The two forces collided and dissipated in midair.

But Anubis's Gatekeeper's assault didn't stop. The black spear pivoted straight toward Shi Feng's chest.

Shi Feng immediately activated Blaze Sprint, boosting his movement speed by 100% for 10 seconds.

With his speed skyrocketing, Shi Feng leaped backward, narrowly dodging the Gatekeeper's thrust.

"Fighting a Great Leader with second-tier strength is way too reckless," Shi Feng muttered after landing, keeping his eyes locked on Anubis's Gatekeeper without charging in for a head-on confrontation.

His priority now was survival — he'd stall for as long as he could.

In just a few short seconds of exchanging blows, he'd gone all out, even popping Double Burst, and had still lost nearly half his HP. If he hadn't been a Sword Saint with a Legendary fragment, he'd have been dead under the Gatekeeper's spear long ago.

But Anubis's Gatekeeper clearly had no intention of giving Shi Feng any more time. It slammed its black spear into the ground, and in an instant, split into three — though each copy's HP had dropped to six million.

"Damn it!" Shi Feng cursed.

Even though the Gatekeeper had split its power into three, making each one considerably weaker, every single copy still had third-tier strength. One-on-one, the outcome wouldn't change.

Now, however, facing three Gatekeepers at once — the situation was more than three times as dangerous as before.

Shi Feng had no choice. He cast Phantom Kill, and a clone appeared beside him. Though the clone was far weaker than his real body — only 70% of his stats — anything that could take some pressure off was worth it.

"Trespassers in the sacred ground shall die!"

All three Gatekeepers charged at Shi Feng simultaneously, unleashing a storm of attacks.

Without a word, Shi Feng cast Nine-Headed Dragon Slash to pin down the middle one, then he and his clone split and bolted in opposite directions.

Come on — fighting three Great Leaders at the same time? Even if he'd advanced to a third-tier Class he wouldn't stand a chance, let alone now.

When the Gatekeepers saw two identical Shi Fengs fleeing in different directions, the one pinned down by Nine-Headed Dragon Slash didn't give chase. The other two split up — one after the real body, one after the clone.

A chase ensued.

The Gatekeeper splitting into three had dramatically increased Shi Feng's peril, but it also gave him a sliver of a chance.

Each of the three Gatekeepers was weaker than before — in both strength and speed. Originally, Shi Feng couldn't have matched the Gatekeeper's speed even remotely, but now they were roughly equal. Moreover, after splitting, the Gatekeeper could no longer use teleportation moves and had to pursue on foot. That gave Shi Feng room to breathe.

Seconds ticked by, and for Shi Feng each one felt like a year.

Both his real body and his clone were losing HP at an alarming rate. Ziyan Liuyun, still inside the teleportation array, couldn't heal him — not because she didn't want to, but because doing so would likely draw one of the Gatekeepers her way, and then nobody would survive. So Shi Feng could only rely on recovery potions.

Fifteen seconds after the teleportation array activated, Shi Feng's clone died. Now it was just the real body against two Gatekeepers.

Seeing the situation turning dire, Shi Feng pulled a Speed Scroll from his backpack, used it, and dashed straight into the exit corridor.

All three Gatekeepers charged in right behind him.

Less than three seconds after Shi Feng entered the corridor, the three caught up.

Looking at the Gatekeepers closing in, Shi Feng cracked a smile.

"See you later!"
